Today marks three months since you have been gone and I have finally accepted the truth. We met 30 years ago and have been through many tribulations, but more loving and happy moments.  There are no regrets about anything. When we saw each other there was nothing but laughter, love, sharing family stories and thanking God for the time we had to visit. If God would have allowed it, I would have given my life for yours (1 John 3:16). You will always be in my heart in New Orleans and every moment we have shared is sealed in my memory, and I can recall them anytime I need encouragement. See you in forever (John 6:51).

For years Lee and I traveled with my sister and her husband, AJ.  The last few years we laughed harder, acted sillier, and took more pictures on our trips and weekend getaways. The trip we planned during her first chemo break was to San Francisco. She'd always wanted to show AJ our Dad's favorite city in the world!  Although the trip was not easy, the best hours were filled with a cable car ride, rolling fog, a stroll along Fisherman's Wharf, great people watching at Pier 39 & Union Square, a little shopping at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, delicious Italian food, and even a memorable Passover Seder thanks to take-out from Wise Sons. Miss Daisy loved our drives throughout “The City”: she held her breath down Lombard Street and felt the sway across the Golden Gate Bridge.  When we got to the other side of the bridge, we were greeted with a breathtaking full moon rising over the bay.  We admired the view with tears rolling down our cheeks.  I recall my prayer of thanks for the gift of being able to share one of her heart's desires.  When she thanked me for planning this trip, we both knew we'd never be back together again.  I Left My Heart in San Francisco.

Monica and I often walked at Album Park on Saturday mornings. This particular Saturday morning, we noticed there were many cars at the park but not enough people to go along with the number of cars.  As we continued to walk around the park, we kept wondering what was going on. When we turned one of the corners, we noticed far ahead of us, there was a huge finish line. Monica very excitedly said, “Let’s pretend we’re part of the race!”  I said, “No! How embarrassing!” Then she pulled my arm and well…she convinced me.  We did it!

We started to run; we joined the runners; we acted like we ran the entire race. As we approached the finish line, people were clapping for us and cheering us along. Monica and I were laughing hysterically.  After we crossed the finish line, Monica  wanted to go back through the finish line so I could take pictures of her.  It was hilarious!

Messages From Her Nieces
Tia Monica always had a way of making people feel special. She was one of the most generous people you’ll ever meet. Everywhere she went, she had others in mind: she would take food and gifts to her coworkers, the nurses at the treatment center, and would bring extras for anyone who might need it. I remember one time, I complimented a headband she was wearing and she immediately took it off and gave it to me, insisting that it went perfectly with my outfit. Her style was impeccable and she always accessorized perfectly. She had an eye for treasures in thrift shops and a knack for getting the best deals. But she didn’t keep her talent to herself, always looking for others as well. 
Throughout Covid, no matter how far apart we were, she found ways to make us all feel close. She would set weekly family walking goals and keep us all accountable, send each of us a recipe she thought we would enjoy (and then wait for pictures of the finished product), share a funny video or tell a joke when we all needed a good laugh. She challenged everyone around her to be their best selves and those closest to her knew her love and support was unwavering. I am grateful to have had her as my aunt and her memory will live on within all of us.    ~Ashlei Nadler       

I have always admired my Tia Monica. Not just her beauty, grace, and ultrachic, sassy sense of style, but who she was. I admired her love for her family and how she exuded joy around her kids, grandkids, and husband, whom she considered to be her biggest blessing and greatest gift. I admired her inherent generosity and how she went out of her way to make people laugh (which she always managed to do effortlessly) and feel comfortable. She took a genuine interest in everyone she came across whether they were family, healthcare personnel, waiters, Marshalls employees, or someone she just happened to encounter while walking past or in a random line, she had an innate ability to make people feel special

What did I love about Moni?
She was a good wife & mother. She enjoyed her Grandchildren & played with them.
She was fun, very smart & funny. We were the party wherever we went.
She was excited for new Italian restaurants wherever we traveled.
She liked for everybody to enjoy sweetbread from Bowie Bakery with her.
She was the best co-pilot because she stayed awake with me.
She had a twinkle in her eye that showed me she loved me.

Driving Miss Daisy
One of my fondest memories are drives around town with my sister. On chemo days and after doctor appointments she'd always ask me, "Sand, where are you Driving Miss Daisy today?"  I'd plan for different drives & sights in the city we love & call home - El Paso.  These drives often included stops for a 2-course meal, one for a savory bite and another stop at Bowie Bakery or some new place for a treat.  Whether at a doctor's office or a restaurant, she'd introduce me, not only as her sister but as her Ride or Die because we were on this journey together.

Throughout the years, we planned our trip to Italy, her "homeland."  She always "knew " she was Italian. With each out of town jaunt, we were getting closer to Italy. As we made our way, one delicious Italian meal at a time, from La Jolla to Las Vegas to Tampa this kept us smiling and hopeful, if only a dream…

What fun to have shared the same space in life with a twin like you. We  protected each other as twins so naturally do. Now my days feel a little misplaced  because God paired me so perfectly with you since birth. Loving, tough, no nonsense, extremely principled, fun, joyous, loyal – you consistently  demonstrated these traits and made us better. Just out of High School, you and  Alex were blessed with a marriage and your boys, Christopher and Aaron, that  you so fiercely protected. A wonderful life indeed. You obediently lived each day, each moment, to glorify the Lord’s strength and peace. You questioned things  with God as we all do, yet remained unshakable that your strength came only  through Him. The evidence is overwhelming, you Monica are the good and  faithful servant. The world is a much better place because of the love you poured  into those you cared for most. Your children, and their children, and the generations to follow have and will receive the truth of goodness and love that flows from your immense strength. I miss my weekly calls, your presence, and so  much more. Your life and love are our reminder that God’s grace is more than  enough for each of us. Until we meet again in heaven on a beautiful sunny day laughing and playing as children do, God bless you.  I love you, James

 Mom, you knew my heart and soul. You understood me. You showed me love through your actions. You loved me unconditionally. You put me first in everything. You had my back in every way possible. You inspired me. You never let me feel sorry for myself. You were tough on me in the best way possible. You believed in me.  You introduced God to me. You made sure He was a big part of my life. You trusted and believed in Him with all your might. Because of you I wholeheartedly sought a woman strong in her faith and her belief in God. You always showed me what strength looked like in adversity. You were so courageous and graceful even in your toughest moments. You made the best of every situation. You put everyone else first. You always gave without expecting anything in return. You never put less than 150% in anything you did.  I loved having your company. You lived in the moment. You were so witty and you brought a billion smiles and laughs to me. You had the most contagious laugh. You carried yourself with so much humility and dignity. You played life by the rules. There was right and there was wrong. You never had a problem calling that out either. You believed we either contributed to the solution or to the problem. You were a voice for those who didn’t have one or struggled to have one.  You and Dad truly loved each other. Both of you were my foundation.  You always made fun of each other but in such a loving way. Seeing your marriage brought me so much joy growing up. I am so thankful to have been raised in a loving home.  I see your smile and joy every second in Fernando. God brought him down at just the right moment. You were and always will be My Mom. I am and always will be your son. I Love You with all my heart. Alex’s Story (7 years old)
I remember when I went birthday shopping with my Yaya.  She already got me like 4 or 5 toys and she asked me if I wanted more. My Mommy actually said I didn't need more even though Yaya still wanted to get me more.
Jacob’s Message (3 years old): 
“I love Yaya”

Well, the next morning, I went outside to remove the snow from Mama’s car.  She was driving the blue Buick Riviera. She had stopped for gas at the Good Time store the previous night. Jejeje... she still had the gas nozzle and about eight feet of hose hanging from the Riviera…


I remember waking up early in the morning and walking with my Mom (cold, hot, rain or shine) from the Pico Norte apartments to my Mom's work, at the YWCA.  We'd get there around 5:45 or 6:00 in the morning and sit at her station until they opened.  She would take out two pieces of cinnamon toast for me to eat and then we'd work on letters, read Sesame Street, and memorize the capitals of the United States.  It was such an endearing time and one I'll cherish forever as "our time" together.

Christopher Alejandro Jaramillo

Most of my fun memories with Monica are from our shopping trips.  I always loved to go shopping with her and she always loved going to find a deal.  She would go rack by rack looking for a deal and she would always find something!  On most of our shopping trips she was able to outlast me and I would find a comfy chair near a dressing room where I could sit and wait for her to finish.  Even this past July in Austin, when we went thrift store shopping I had to find a chair while she went looking for treasures.  She could always find a piece of jewelry or clothing to add to her collection and she always knew just how to put an outfit together.  She also introduced me to the tradition of shopping the day after Christmas.  I always looked forward to going shopping with her and seeing what kind of deals we could find.  Christmas never felt more like Christmas than when we were in El Paso.  She decorated the house beautifully and I always looked forward to seeing it. She was a remarkable woman and will be missed immensely.   ~ Heather Jaramillo (Christopher)           

My Dear Monica, your absence has been the most painful chapter of my life. Dad would agree. I will always embrace all the wonderful memories of you. You grew up to be a responsible, strong and loving Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother and Yaya to your five grandchildren. I take great comfort in knowing all of the angels in heaven are now embracing you. No more pain, no more treatment schedules you so bravely took on to the very end. I am so proud of the love you extended all of us and those whom you met along your most courageous journey these past four years. Monica, I know you are now loving the beautiful sunflower fields in heaven on your daily walks with Him. One day I too will be with you and our Lord on the same walks. In the meantime, I will take you shopping with me at Trader Joes and your favorite clothing stores, but I can’t promise to accessorize as beautifully as you.

My Dear Friend,

I miss you lots!  This was not how it was supposed to be and to that you would say “why not me”.  You  never complained once and you always saw the positive side to everything. I know you don’t like compliments but, you taught us so much through your example. As you would  often say “say what you mean and mean what you say”. 
I miss your messages, your sense of humor, your teachings and your unfailing way to remind us that God is always good. 
“Let’s agree to disagree” became our friendship motto. You didn’t mince words and I loved you for that, in doing so you helped us see a different perspective often teaching us a life lesson if we were willing to learn. Our honest conversations is what I will miss the most.
Until we meet again my friend.  Know we loved and appreciated you very much💗

Lessons from Fierce Elegance

I woke up early this morning thinking about her.  We were never meant to be whole in this life.  Completion equates to fullness which leaves no space to grow and evolve.  We do not etch in the sand the finish line of our journey.  Once God decides that we are whole and have bloomed in full, He calls us home.  He then fills us with His compassionate love. It is then, in His embrace that we are whole.  With fierce elegance, my prima Monica is whole.  

I love you Monica, Al, Chris, Aaron, Tia Goya,  James, Sandy and all of the family.

To the family and friends of Monica Rivera Jaramillo

I speak for the classmates from MacArthur middle school and Burges High who were blessed with the opportunity to meet and grow to know the beloved Monica Rivera Jaramillo. What a beautiful soul with a matching smile and a black comb in tow to match👍🏾 

Monica was charitable, kind and always smiling.  By the 7th grade when I met her, Monica was mature beyond her years. I am truly grateful to Monica for her friendship and perspective she would share with me during the many years we were classmates. 

I also want to thank the Rivera family for being so nice to me and inviting me and the rest of the Burges squad to their annual Christmas parties. What great memories! I always felt very welcome and I was inspired by all the friendship shown to me. Thank you to each of you for that. Its no mystery where Monica developed the wonderful qualities we all grew to admire and love.

And to Alex and your sons and their families, Mrs R, Sandy and James and your families. My most deepest condolences. You all are a beautiful family and I truly appreciate the friendships over the years.

May God Bless Monica, Alex, their sons and their families and the Grand Kids  and the entire Rivera family. Monica lives for the ages and will never be forgotten. The World is brighter for having had Monica here on Earth when we had her.

I remember some great times in high school. May you rest in peace.

Even in the passing of a younger relative, some of us older people left behind, we can learn how to continue carrying on in life.  In the case of Monica, my beloved niece, she gave all of us a spiritual  lesson by her faith, behavior, and outlook on life.  These God given virtues which came from her heart gave all of us inspiration and hope.  Monica's mind-set was that of a positive attitude of peace and serenity.  That all good things come from God.  She demonstrated that she was at peace with her situation.  Like Philippians 4:13 says "I can do all things that strengthen me through God".  This is a real litmus test for our own spirituality.  With Christ living in Monica's heart, there was no obstacle that could not be overcome  .  Monica, thanks for the lesson.  May you rest in peace in the Glory of God.

I love you, Monica, and all of our family.  You are an incredible human being.  Thank you for showing us about courage and the love of life and fellows around us.

Monica was my cousin and she was a strong, amazing woman who fought her battle hard. I will always remember her smile, which would always light up a room. She was always their for her family to guide and give many of us strength. We love you so much Monica and we will always carry you in our hearts.  Aaron, Chris, Alex, Sandy, James, and Goya you all have the best Angel watching over you all and with lots of love our condolences from our family to yours.

Monica was the most genuine and kind person, coworker, and friend . My family adored her so much. Everyone who had the privilege of knowing her is a better person because of it.  When our company broke up we went separate ways but would see each other here and there and we’re always happy to see each other.  I would think of her and it always brought a smile to my face and heart…I will always treasure everything she did for me and how she helped me…

Where do I begin, Monica and I were placed on the same path after so many years and God blessed us with a beautiful journey. Monica was not only a co-worker, she was my confidant, my go to, my best-friend. Monica always had a nurturing and loving approach to those she came in contact with. I will always remember our laughs, our lunches our struggles and our triumphs but most of all our chats morning, afternoon and at 10:00 pm. Monica cared for my children like they were her own and will always have a special place in our hearts. Monica I will miss you so so much and Thank the Lord for allowing us to have the special friendship we had. Our bond is irreplaceable. Monica was my friend and she was the most loving and caring person I had ever met. I might of never seen Monica every day but I always, I always had a spot for her In my heart and I know that life isn’t fair but this one time just this one time I wish life was because then Monica would be with us right now. I hope now that she is in a place where there is peace and there is no suffering anymore. I will always have you in my heart Monica.❤️

Monica and I were coworkers but more than that, she was my dear friend. She was my person I could go to when I needed advice or a good laugh. She was genuine, kind, loving and caring. My daughters also had the wonderful opportunity to have met her. She loved them and they loved her. There is a painting my oldest daughter made for her sitting just above her work desk, it’s a girl on a swing over looking the mountains. It reminds me of her ❤️. Monica made a huge impact in my life, I will forever hold her in my heart and memories. I pray for comfort for her family.

One of my favorite memories of my beautiful sister in law was when I was 9 years old... she came to celebrate Christmas with us and brought me a gift. She gave me a musical jewelry box with ballerinas. .which I still have and always held close to my heart. She showed me love the first time I met her. Her brownies were the best I have ever had. She always appreciated when I baby sat for her kiddos. I will always cherish the love she had for my brother Alex. She was an amazing wife and mother. She raised the most respectful... hardworking and loving boys. Thank you Monica for the love you gave my brother and for being the most supportive and loving mother to Chris and Aaron. But most ofall... for loving the Jaramillo's the way you did. I BOW TO YOU MY LADY FOR YOU WERE AND WILL ALWAYS BE THE MOST CLASSY AND BEAUTIFUL HUMANBEING I WAS LUCKY TO KNOW .  THE BEST SISTER IN LAW I COULD HAVE ASKED FOR. MAY YOU REST IN PEACE.❤🙏

Monica and I were coworkers for a time. Her positive energy and kind spirit were gifts to all of us. She gave care to all of us with her kindness and generosity, and I will miss her greatly. She spoke often of her love for her husband, children, sister, and other family members. She showed love and kindness as well to the families we served in our work. I'm praying comfort for her family and friends during this time. May her memory be a blessing!
