Yvonne Eugénie (“Jean”) LeSage Carr passed away in Alamogordo, New Mexico on July 30, 2016 at the age of 90 following a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland S. Carr, a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, on August, 14, 2011. She is survived by her daughter, Aline Carr.
A long-time resident of El Paso, Texas, Yvonne was born in Indre, Loire-Inférieure, France on March 15, 1926 and raised by her grandparents, Pierre Debec and Josephine Freour Debec, on a farm in Saint-Jean-de-Boiseau. Soon after World War II, she met Leland, a young soldier stationed in France with the U.S. Army. They were married on February 15, 1947 and resettled in the U.S. in 1949. During Leland’s 27 year military career and numerous relocations to various military bases, including Fort Bliss, they decided to return permanently to El Paso in 1965.
Yvonne was a socially active person who had a knack for organizing activities and events. Her ultimate passion was to be a useful and active member of her community. She spent much of her life in El Paso during the 1960s and 70s volunteering for numerous organizations, including the Camp Fire Girls, her daughter’s schools, her church (First Christian Church), and the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. Later she became a member of the El Paso Orchid Society and worked for over 20 years as a volunteer for the American Red Cross at William Beaumont Hospital. She was also an avid gardener who grew vegetables in her backyard for her family. She later grew roses, and her husband built 2 greenhouses for her in their backyard where she focused on growing orchids.
A visitation will be held from 11:00am-12:30pm, August 8, 2016, at Martin Funeral Home on Montana followed by a graveside service at 1:00pm at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
