
He graduated from Huntingburg High School and attended U of E. He was a Top Turret Gunner and Flight Engineer in the Air Force during WWII and was a member of VFW Post #1114. He was employed at Swift & Company and Whirlpool for many years, as well as McDonald Douglas in St. Louis. He was a lifetime member of Melody Hills Free Methodist Church.
Julian was preceded in death by his wife, Clarice (Birkhead) Smiley, on December 22, 2000.
He is survived by his son, Gregory (Susan) Smiley; daughter, Julie (Tom) Freese; stepsons, Larry and David Rueger; stepdaughter, Janice Slifer; grandchildren, Jamie, Jessica, Brian, Angie (Paul), Matthew, Laurie Jane and Sam; great-grandchildren, Cole, Kendra, Caleb, Isabella, Elijah, Isaiah, Moriah and Josiah; and sister, Shirley (Jack) Donaldson.
Services will be 1:00 PM Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Alexander West Chapel, officiated by Rev. John Burgess, with entombment in Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit Tuesday from 10:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.
