Mildred Christine "Sande" Jackson, 91, of Evansville, passed away Thursday, August 13, 2015 at Pine Haven Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born March 5, 1924 to the late Henry F. and Selma (Winternheimer) Sander.
She graduated in 1942 from F.J. Reitz High School where she was a drum majorette for the marching band. After graduation, Sande worked for Hoosier Cardinal until she enlisted in the US Navy during WWII. Serving with the WAVES from 1944 to 1946, her assignments included the Naval Powder Factory at Indian Head, MD and Patuxent River Naval Air Station, MD where she was involved with production and testing of aerial and ship-launched rockets. After returning from the Navy, Sande worked for McReynolds and Drier and then Union Federal Savings until 1953 when she left to raise her two children. In the late 1960's, she returned to the workforce and joined her "second family" as secretary/receptionist at Jesse F. Stock Insurance. Sande had a unique talent of associating voices with names, and after a first phone call, was able to greet clients by name on subsequent calls. Sande retired from the insurance agency at age 80, after 35 years of service. She was a member of the Association of Insurance Women, Beta Sigma Phi social sorority, and a life-long member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ.
Sande was a caring and compassionate mother and mother-in-law, and always put the interests of others ahead of her own. She loved meeting and interacting with people on a social and professional basis. It was virtually impossible for her to go out in public without meeting someone she was related to, went to school with, attended her church or Sunday School class, worked with, or had met at one time or another. Sande enjoyed music, and though she would not admit to a lovely alto singing voice, she would admit to a fondness for pipe organ music and marching bands. She would attend Indiana University football games just for the "thrill" of seeing and hearing the Marching Hundred take the field during pre-game and half-time performances.
Sande was preceded in death by her infant brother; her parents; her husband of 44 years, Fred Jackson, in 1996; and sister, Vernita "Sandy" Jewell, in February 2015. She is survived by her son, Jeffrey F. Jackson (Debbie) of Evansville, IN; daughter, Christa L. Jackson (Harold E. Dooley) of Weatherford, TX; and nephew, Stephen E. Jewell (Betty Sue Lynn) of Evansville, IN.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Monday, August 17, 2015, at Alexander West Chapel, officiated by Rev. Linda Presely, with interment in Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit Sunday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM and Monday from 9:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank William Sutton, MD, Adam Bowman and the staff at Pine Haven, especially Melissa, Nikki, Melanie, Erin, Stephanie and Yashura; and Linda and Angie with Southern Care Hospice, for all their care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 2227 W. Michigan St., Evansville, IN. Condolences may be made online at www.AlexanderWestChapel.com.
