Walter was born November 14, 1919 in Mt. Vernon, IN to the late Joseph and Julia
(Schenk) Sammet. He had worked as a mechanic at Hocker Brake Company and in
maintenance at Deaconess Hospital. Walter was a veteran of the United States Army
serving during World War II and was a member of VFW Post #1114. Walter was a
longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Legion of Mary at Sacred Heart, a
life member of the St. Philip Men’s Club, the Owl’s and a current member of St. Boniface
Catholic Church.
Walter is survived by five daughters, Lana (Richard) Jabour of Key West, FL, Carol Hile,
Jane Sammet, Susan (Donald) Turpen and Judith Gibbs, all of Evansville; two sons,
Ronald (Rhonda) Sammet of Mt. Vernon, IN and Fred (Linda) Sammet of Evansville; a
sister, Marie Stewart; two brothers, Ollie (Monita) Sammet and Paul (Jean) Sammet;
thirteen grandchildren, twenty seven great grandchildren and two great great
grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Mary
Agnes (Feldmann) Sammet in 2001; by a sister, Cecilia Wilderman and by brothers,
Clarence, William, Sylvester, Edward, Joseph and Arthur Sammet.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, January 4, 2018
at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Rev. Jay Davidson officiating. Entombment will follow in
Memorial Park Cemetery, where the Vanderburgh County Retired Veterans Memorial Club
will conduct military rites.
Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 until 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday at Pierre Funeral
Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street, where there will be a memorial service conducted by the
church at 4:00 P.M. Friends may also visit with the family from 10:30 A.M. until service
time on Thursday at St. Boniface Catholic Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Boniface Parish.
