Gaylord Walter Durland

Gaylord Walter Durland, 85, died on March 20, 2024, at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, Washington.

He was born on December 24, 1938, to Ruth “Grumpy” Weitman Durland and William Bryan Durland in Hood River, Oregon.

Gaylord attended Portland State College and Brigham Young University, where he received a bachelor’s in music education, and California State University in Fullerton, where he worked toward a master’s degree in instrumental conducting. He also served for over five years in the Oregon National Guard.

He married Lorene Warner on March 17, 1966, in the Salt Lake City Temple, and they have eleven children: Gaylene, Lyle, Brent, Robin, Scott, Carmen, Amber, Janine, Spencer, Traci, and Gregory.

As a youth, Gaylord was a talented trumpet player, jamming with his brother, Frosty, and playing in jazz bands for local dances. He further honed his skills in college, and he was able to use this knowledge for decades as a music educator, teaching everything from band, orchestra, jazz, and marching band to guitar, music theory, choir, and elementary music education.

He was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving multiple missions himself and with his wife. He also devoted much time to researching the Durland family genealogy line. He had a lifelong love of working on cars and tinkering with inventions, or “rigtions,” as he called them.

Gaylord is survived by his wife, Lorene, and their eleven children, as well as their spouses, children, and grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, June Clapp.

He is preceded in death by his parents and six of his seven siblings as well as many other friends and relatives.

Funeral services will be Thursday, March 28, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the Harbour Pointe Ward building of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 11001 Harbour Pointe Boulevard, Mukilteo, Washington 98275. A viewing will be held 10:00–10:45 a.m.

Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery at 4504 Broadway in Everett.
