Charles Rexford Glensor III, 87, passed away with family by his side on February 20th in Roseville, CA. Born on April 5, 1929 in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY, his nickname was “red.” Active in Boy Scouts, he taught swimming and lifeguarding at summer camps. As a teenager, he dug graves at Staten Island’s Moravian Cemetery and was a lifeguard at several Long Island beaches. He often talked of lessons he learned from Grandma Larson, the most important he passed on to family was “work hard first, then play.”
His love of flying led him to spend most of his money earning a pilot’s license at the age of 16 from a decorated WWII pilot at Hoffman Field on Staten Island. After high school, he began banking School at Rutgers University Banking Program in NYC while working for Irving Trust Company. At 21 years, his love of flying led him to enlist in the Air Force where he trained as a flight engineer on C121 radar planes. He was quickly sent to Germany where he met the love of his life Helga and they soon married. Charles was a veteran of several important military deployments including Panama Canal, Cuba’s “bay of pigs” and Vietnam.
He retired from the Airforce in 1971 and was hired by the California Department of Corrections where he worked 20 years and retired at the rank of Captain. While working, he completed an Associates, Bachelors and Masters degrees. Still, not a weekend went by without the Glensor family and friends enjoying picnics, camping or other outings. Family was always first in the Glensor household.
He was most known for his quiet generosity and kindness. First to help neighbors, friends and family, he expected nothing in return. It was simply how he was raised and felt it was the right thing to do.
He is survived by his wife Helga (deceased), brother Ronnie (deceased) sons Ronald (Kristy), Tommy (Nancy) and Steven Glensor (deceased) (Kathy); daughters Monika Straver(Gerard) and Caroline Glensor; grandchildren Esther, Bianca, Breanne, Kelly, Steven, Devan, Ronnie, Tera; and 12 great grandchildren.
