Clay was born January 22, 1952 in Berkeley, California. He was the youngest of four sons born to Bill and Virginia (Gini) Sungar, and was the devoted husband of Gayle and loving father of Alana Sungar.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two of his beloved brothers, James Brian and Steven Mark Sungar. In addition to his wife and daughter, Clay is survived by his eldest brother William Grant Sungar and family.
As a licensed contractor he was involved in many residential and commercial projects throughout Northern California. His hobbies and occupations included photography and real estate sales, but his first love was construction and woodworking, endeavors he continued well into his years-long bout with cancer.
Clay’s father, Bill, was a builder and developer in the Bay Area. While teaching his sons to work hard and enjoy life to the fullest, he also infused in them a sense of adventure and curiosity. When Clay was just entering grade school, Bill and Gini packed up the family and travelled around Europe for a year in a VW bus. Upon returning stateside, the boys were instructed (whenever queried at school) to describe their father’s occupation as “a beachcomber on the shores of life”.
Clay was known for his loyalty, integrity, and competence. He had a beautiful smile, great sense of humor, and infectious enthusiasm for new challenges.
He was a tolerant, kind and decent man; a husband, father, brother, son, and dear friend. A genuinely good person, gone too soon.
In lieu of flowers, friends of the Sungar family have established an educational trust for Alana at Wells Fargo Bank: Account # 757-4890724 or donations in Clay’s memory may be made to the Sarcoma Foundation of America.
