George Floyd Bell was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 10, 1943, to Walter and Louise Bell. Like many African Americans searching for opportunity, George's parents and his nine siblings, Thelma, Lawrence, Walter(Knute), Hayward, Charles, Edith, Aubrey, Louise & Calvin, moved to San Francisco, California.
George attended San Francisco Schools, graduating from Mission High in 1961. After graduation, George married his high school sweetheart Pauline Calhoun of San Francisco, CA. Four children came from that union: Florence, Floyd (Kashif), Franklin & Forrest.
George married Dorsie Fisher, and from that union, one child, Simeon (proceeded), was born.
George joined the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU). He was a proud member of San Francisco's Local 10 for over forty years until his retirement in 2009 as a Lineman. After his retirement, George moved to Sacramento, CA, and enjoyed his nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all of whom were a tremendous source of pride.
George enjoyed and loved gathering with his family and friends. He took every opportunity to show his love and provide encouragement and wisdom along with good food and music, such as Bobby Blue Bland, BB King, and Muddy Waters.
George Bell's presence was felt whenever he was in the room. He was a mainstay on the San Francisco waterfront and an inspiration to his family. He will truly be missed.
