

Janet Van Wert, 91, lead an amazing life of generosity and love. She passed away on April 6, 2020 in Sacramento after a wonderful life with family and many friends. Born in San Francisco on April 22, 1928 Janet was orphaned at an early age. She was raised in Burlingame, CA by relatives.
She met the love of her life, Franklin Van Wert (deceased), in San Francisco, where she worked as a Draftsperson Supervisor for PT&T. They were married February 23, 1949. During the Korean War, Franklin was transferred to Panama where Janet joined him for 2 years and they had their first child. After the war they returned to Oakland and began the rest of their adventure together. They moved to Sacramento in 1960 and raised 5 children.
Janet dedicated her life to community and service to others. She was active in her church, St. Matthews Episcopal Church, working on the Vestry, creating and care of the sacramental linens, Youth leader, Food Closet coordinator, EWC president for many years and Choir. She volunteered for the various schools her children went to as an art Docent, Blue Bird Mother, and Den Leader for Cub Scouts… having up 90 boys camped out in her back yard. She also volunteered at various schools throughout the Sacramento areas an Art Docent, with crafts and art history lessons. She also volunteered for Senior Gleaners, and River City Quilt Guild as president, parliamentarian, quilt show committee and community service, where she made over 100 charity quilts.
Janet’s passion for quilting began in the early 70’s with a community class in quilting with her daughter. Her creative nature and humor came through in her wall hangings and her color sense came through on her many quilt lap and bed quilts.
Janet is survived by her children: William (wife Molly), Robert (wife Huong), Elizabeth Lonnquist (husband Keith) and James; her grand children: Jeffery, Landon, Eryn(Ryan), Kenn (Emily) and Andrew Lonnquist (Darcy); and great grandson: Calvin; along with many nieces and nephews.
Janet was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Franklin Van Wert, and son Jeffery, and many loving sisters, bother and relatives. A memorial will be held at a later date.
Janet will always be remembered for her many stories, great wit, quick smile, artistic ability, compassion, understanding and mostly her love for life!
