John Robert Philpot, lovingly known as Bob, was born on January 6, 1947, in Sacramento, California, to Ruby and Robert Philpot. Three years later, he was joined by his younger brother, James Spencer, with whom he shared a lifelong bond.
Bob grew up in East Sacramento on 46th and T Street. He attended Sacramento High School, graduating with the Class of 1964. He went on to earn his associate’s degree from Sacramento City College before transferring to San Jose State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Business. Soon after, he began a long career with AT&T.
While living in Aptos, Bob met Cora Sue Sherman, and together they welcomed their daughter, Shannan. The family later returned to the Sacramento area, settling in Wilton on five acres of land where horses became a central part of their lives. Ruby, Bob’s beloved mother, often joined them as they traveled to support Shannan’s passion for hunter/jumper and dressage competitions. Their property, affectionately named Pro farms, became a hub for horse shows and community gatherings. In addition to his love of horses, Bob had a deep passion for racing stock cars. He traveled throughout California competing in races, embracing both the thrill of the sport and the camaraderie of the racing community.
After Sue’s passing in 2006, Bob was blessed to find love again. In 2010 he met Kathryn, and they married in 2011. Together, they shared years of devotion, laughter, and family joy. Bob is survived by his wife Kathryn; his daughter Shannan (Bill); grandchildren Scott, Kayleigh, and Lexi; and great-grandson Brantley. He is also survived by his stepchildren Kevin (Jennifer, and their children Connor and Miles; Erica (Spencer) and their children Lucia, Leo, and Lola; his brother James Spencer (Margaret); niece Jaime; and nephew Jason.
Bob will be remembered for his love of family, his adventurous spirit, and his dedication to the passions that enriched his life. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue in the hearts of those who loved him.
