Kenneth Alan Seymour Jr., a retired Senior Systems Engineer and graduate of UC San Diego, Revelle College in Physics, died on Sunday, July 26, 2020 after a long struggle with a rare neurological illness.
Ken was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, the oldest of two children.
His father, Kenneth Alan Seymour Sr. was a graduate of MIT in mathematics. He worked at IBM data systems and in the aerospace industry.
His mother, Mary Lucy Hanrahan Seymour, a graduate of Bentley’s School of Accounting in Boston, practiced bookkeeping. Mary was the grand-niece of Richard Henry Dana, author of Two Years Before the Mast and was a descendent of a family of authors and lawyers among the founding fathers of Boston and Harvard University.
While majoring in physics at UCSD Ken Jr. taught himself computer programing. He was fluent in a number of computer languages which he used to pursue hi career as a software engineer and advancing to senior systems engineer. He worked for defense contractor, traveling to Iceland multiple times and worked with public train systems traveling all over the US to set up light rail train communications.
Ken had a passion for learning. As an amateur astronomer he built his own telescope, including grinding the lense by hand. From an early age he loved long bike rides, sail boating, travel, music, photography and cats.
He had a love of nature and enjoyed hiking, camping, canoeing and birdwatching. He learned painting and sketching at the local art center, where he met his wife. They did plain air painting together in nature and in their travels.
Mr. Seymour was fluent in French which he used during travel to Paris and Montreal, and in Spanish which was useful while living in California.
Ken was a lover of life with a wry sense of humor which he kept until the very end. He as a gentle soul. He was a resident of All Seasons Care Home in Orangevale, CA where he was well regarded for his easy-going nature. He passed gently and with dignity there.
He is survived by his loving wife, Betty, his sister Jaclyn Pritchard, niece Emma Nellie, step son Chris Thompson and three step grandchildren Linka, Juli and Kacee.
Due to the current COVID protocols for Sac/Placer/El Dorado County, guests
must wear protective masks at all times while inside the funeral home facility
and practice the recommended six foot social distancing.
