Born on August 2, 1956, in San Francisco, Mario was the eldest child of Mario Ernesto Staben Sr. and Paula Esmeralda Montes Staben, who immigrated from El Salvador. He was raised in South San Francisco alongside his three brothers, Rafael, Jeff, and Don, and two sisters, Esmeralda and Maureen.
Mario developed a love for sports early in life, often playing baseball, football, and soccer with his siblings at Orange Park. A devoted fan of the Minnesota Vikings and Boston Red Sox, he also enjoyed cheering on local teams at Candlestick Park with peanuts or sunflower seeds in hand.
After graduating from South San Francisco High School in 1974, he attended Skyline College and began working as a warehouse dispatcher before finding his passion as a delivery truck driver. He especially loved road trips to Oregon and California's Central Coast.
Mario shared many meaningful memories with his former wife, Becky. Though their marriage ended, they remained lifelong friends. He enjoyed playing pool and gambling, often playing poker at Artichoke Joe’s. A talented violinist and live music enthusiast, he also loved movies—Smokey and the Bandit, Star Wars, and The Godfather among his favorites.
Though he had no children, Mario was a devoted uncle and a steady presence for his siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Known for his humor, warm smile, and infectious laugh, he brought joy to those around him. He especially loved sharing meals with loved ones—never turning down a roast beef deli sandwich.
Mario is remembered by his siblings, nieces, nephews, extended family, and many dear friends. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
