Santosh was born in Ghaziabad, India, to Prithvi Singh Jain, a school inspector, and Kampa Devi Jain, a homemaker. Santosh was the second eldest among six girls and three boys. Her exact birthdate is unknown as her father was frequently in jail for agitating against British rule. She uses August 2, 1944, as her birthdate but could be as much as two years older.
She married Naresh in 1967. They would have celebrated 50 years of marriage next year. She gave birth to her son, Alok, in 1971, and her daughter, Anita, in 1973. Shortly after Anita's birth, Santosh traveled to the U.S. with her two children to join her husband who had emigrated a year earlier and settled in Baltimore, Maryland.
In 1983, Santosh and her family moved to the Sacramento area, where her husband worked as an electrical engineer at McClellan Air Force Base. Santosh later found work as a chemist at a medical lab.
She was a constant source of support to her two youngest sisters, Manju and Meena, who later moved to the U.S.and relocated to Sacramento to be closer to her.
Santosh was known for forcing people to overeat, an inability to throw anything away, her giddy laugh, and a gentle demeanor. She will be deeply missed by her husband, children, sisters, and grandchildren.
