Syrenia, Pearl to those who knew her best, was the last of a generation that was born and raised in a very remote and inhospitable part of the country, the Dry Cimarron of Northeastern New Mexico. Her father, uncles, and brothers were among the last of the real cowboys, the last of the pioneers of the old west.
Pearl and Darwin moved to Sacramento, California a couple of years after their marriage in1941 and raised three sons. After Darwin’s death in 2001 she moved to Moriarty, NM in 2006 near her son, Glen; during which time she cared for her older sister, Martha, until her death in 2010.
She was a long time Christian and church supporter, attending regularly and participating in congregational activities at Capital City Baptist and later at 14th Avenue Baptist Church. One of her greatest joys was teaching preschool children, which she did for many years. During Pearl’s early retirement years, she worked for the Committee on Morals Concerns in California. Her participation in the Committee’s work was one of the things for which she was most proud.
She is preceded in death by husband, Darwin D. Stagg; grandson James T. Stagg;
brothers, Samuel Cochran, Albert Cochran, Carrol Cochran; and sister, Martha Owens. She is survived by three sons and their wives: Glen W. Stagg and Vicky of Moriarty, NM; Carrol W. Nine grandchildren: Sheila, John, Laneia, Sandy , Jeffery, Christopher, Elissa, Michael, and Jennifer; and nine great grandchildren: Tristan, James, Autumn, Magen, John, Charla, Addie, Brooke and Colton.
