Juan Puig, lifelong resident of Hebbronville died June 28, 2013 at the age of 79 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Juan died peacefully in his home surrounded by the ones he laughed with, lived for, and loved. Juan joins his parents, brother Dario Puig and Gloria P. Bazan in heaven.
Mr. Puig was born in San Diego, TX to Raul M. Puig and Alicia Ramirez Puig but relocated to Laredo where he spent his childhood years. At the early age of 12, he lost his father to pneumonia and his mother was left to be a single mom. Mr. Puig and his family moved to Hebbronville to live with his mother’s family, and there he took on the adult responsibility of working many different jobs to help support his family. He worked at the COD café, shined shoes in the summertime, worked in Central Furniture Store and even worked in the undertaking department where he first learned to drive … in the hearse. After high school, Mr. Puig enlisted in the Air Force where he was stationed in Japan and served during the Korean War. After returning to the states he was stationed in Fort Worth where he met his future wife. Mr. Puig finished his tour of duty and enrolled at Texas A&I University in Kingsville where he graduated with a degree in Business. He married Gloria Flores and they moved back to Hebbronville to raise their family.
Mr. Puig worked as a business and typing schoolteacher in Roma ISD and Jim Hogg County ISD. He believed in education and encouraged his family and everyone he knew to get their education. In 1968, Mr. Puig opened up Puig Insurance Agency, selling insurance out of his briefcase and eventually opening up his office right next to his home. He took pride in his business, but also truly relished in the friends he made during his time in his office. He knew no strangers; everyone was his friend, his “Tio”, or his “Primo”. During this time he also worked a second job as an SMT truck driver. Always working two jobs to support his family while his wife stayed home to care for their 8 children.
Mr. Puig was an active member of the community, serving as the first manager of the Water Department, was a member of the Selective Service Committee, member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, member of the Mr. and Mrs. Club, member of the School Board, and very active in the Cursillo movement. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, raising his goats, pigs, cows, and chickens. He also enjoyed watching all the different activities that his grandchildren participated in throughout the years.
Mr. Puig was a great man of God who sincerely lived by the scriptures. He practiced the Beatitudes in his everyday life, giving encouragement to other cancer patients, even while suffering through his own pain, never hesitating to help someone in need, giving to the poor, and all the while being a very humble man. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gloria Flores Puig and his 8 children, Raul (Maria Antonia) Puig of Hebbronville, Veronica (Delio) Palacios of Hebbronville, Patricia (Federico) Lujan of Zapata, Diane Puig of Edinburg, Joanna (Curtis) Burke of Tennessee, Linda (Jaime) Gonzalez of Edinburg, Juan Puig, Jr. of San Antonio, and Cynthia (Joe) Manriquez of Hebbronville, brother Raul (Estela) Puig Jr.of Rivera, sister Raquel P. Lopez of Zapata. He also leaves behind 25 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, a great citizen, a hard worker and great provider. Mr. Puig had a heart of gold and he will be greatly missed.
