Beloved mother, grandmother, sister and revered teacher, Norma Nava Herrera, passed away on May 24, 2015 at Methodist Stone Oak Hospital in San Antonio, TX at the age of 61. She was born in Laredo, TX on February 25, 1954 to Eusebio G. Nava and Petra Martinez Nava of Hebbronville.
Our mother graduated from Hebbronville High School in 1972. Some of her fondest memories were playing clarinet in the marching band and twirling. In 1976, she graduated from Texas A&I University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Later, she received a Master’s Degree in Special Education.
Although she taught at many schools in several cities, she spent the majority of her career teaching at Bruni High School. For 37 years, she was not only a teacher, but a true educator. She believed in students even when they didn’t believe in themselves continuously encouraging them to achieve greatness despite their hardships. Her patience and undying devotion to her students impacted countless lives. Many of her students kept in touch long after they graduated. Outside the classroom, mom enjoyed gardening, fishing, going to the beach at South Padre Island, going to the ranch, taking care of her animals and spending time with family and friends. Mom always put family first and truly cherished every moment she spent with us. She had a unique way of making every holiday, birthday and milestone special. She was the giver of all givers.
Norma is survived by her brother Adalberto (Lynne) Nava and sister, Nelda (Carlos) Perez; daughters, Melissa (John) Jackson of Zapata, Laura A. Herrera of San Antonio & Sarah R. Herrera of Laredo; her grandchildren Liam, Nicholas & Luke; and countless cousins, nieces and nephews.
