I am so grateful to have met Tony through our work on the LLW Corporate Board. He was such a gentleman and as our host, worked so hard to make everything just right ... and it was. This is a sad and startling loss for everyone. My deepest condolences.

I am so sorry for your loss, my deepest sympathy goes out to you.  I am happy to say that I had the honor and pleasure of working with Tony over the years.  He knew so much about waste operations and activities, a wealth of information. I always knew that when I called Tony he would be there to help me with my problem.  I am going to miss having him as 'a life line.'

I had heard of Tony many times over the years in DOE conference calls and presentations, but never had the opportunity to meet or work with him until last fall during a joint DOE assessment at Brookhaven National Lab on Long Island.  Wow, what a man.  He knew the processes and the people that was integral to the success of our assessment.  What a pleasure to meet him and work with him.  I learned so much that small amount of time.  We have talked numerous times since our departure from Brookhaven.  What a great guy you had.  Very cliche, but he was a gentleman and a scholar.  Thank you for allowing me a small amount of his time getting to know him and being able to call him a friend.

It was my pleasure to work with Tony for the past 10 years and to actually get the opportunity to meet him on several occasions. His enthusiasm and rational thinking were a significant contribution to the DOE waste management effort and both will be sorely missed. Like many others, I was shocked last week to learn that Tony was suddenly gone, just as I was departing for busines travel related to problems we had worked together.  Tony was a close professional colleague and was an incredibly resourceful person who relished overcoming important challenges.  For those skills he is already deeply missed.  Two of the characteristics which helped make Tony so effective and delightful were his wry sense of humor and an extensive professional network which he used continuously to advance the public good.  My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of loss.

Dear Donna and Mike: When I think of Tony a smile comes to my face.  He was a wonderful person and co-worker.  I always enjoyed working with him and talking to him about life, work and family.  I know he was proud of you Mike and a caring and thoughtful husband. Though I know he will be missed, his memory will be in my heart and soul and his legacy will last forever.

At work I will always remember Tony as our own Don Quixote de la Mancha, always tilting at windmills and working out of the box with keen creativity and a willingness to challenge the status quo and innovate.  

He was the first person who welcomed me when I transferred in from California and made it a point to make me feel welcome, coming in to chat with me about his work and at times reviewing/ sharing/ commenting back and forth with me on things he saw or that I sent to him.  He was a friend when I knew no one else.  

He helped me do some informal research on bee-keeping when we asked the deputy manager whether we could suggest bee-keeping in a remote part of the laboratory campus-  to help the scientific and farming communities with the colony collapse disorder ravaging the domestic bee population.  While we were not allowed to pursue the concept we had great discussions while researching it.  

He used his scientific knowledge to benefit the greater good and shared his expertise with generosity, enthusiasm and a wry sense of humor- I will remember him with fondness.

Tony's legacy to his “at-work” extended family: 
"A professional of substance, with exceptional judgment and ability to keep confidence; a principled team player that consistently delivered desired outcomes in the public good; and yet, of good will, odd humor, and a friend to all.

Tony was my mentor and a good friend.  Although I worked many miles away at the Brookhaven Site Office, we spent many many hours talking on the phone.  There was not a question you could not ask Tony nor a problem you could have that Tony would not be able to help you with.  He taught me so much over the past 10 years.  I will miss him terribly.

So sorry for your loss, I am without words...

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Tony!  I remember the many late evenings he and I worked late in the geology department when we were working our Master degrees and traveling back to Marquette Park on the bus together.  Catching the transfer from the Halsted St. to Archer, then Archer to California at 1 or 2 in the AM.  I can't imagine what you all are going through!  He was good man!

So sorry for your loss Donna and Michael. Greif can be so hard when the loss is so sudden and unexpected. May all the memories you hold in your heart help you through each day.
