Claudio Alejandro Cossio or “ Cayito” as he was known by close friends and family can be best described as a gentle giant. Taking on a challenge like transferring into a new high school might be difficult for some but Claudio was not fearful or intimidated. He was comfortable and confident in himself.. from his sense of style to his sense of humor! Claudio was mindful of his impression on others, Claudio’s tall structure may have caught people’s attention, but his kind soul captured their hearts, Claudio’s passing was sudden and unexpected. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and on April 5th,2020 after being rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital’s emergency rooms where he spent days fighting for his life. On April 8th, Claudio Alejandro Cossio took his last breath at 6:26 p.m.
Claudio Alejandro Cossio was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 26, 1998. His mother, Nohemi and father Hector raised him along with the help of his grandparents, Claudio Cossio, and Lupe Martinez who loved him unconditionally. Claudio will always remain close to their hearts. He will forever be in the hearts of siblings Hector and Mia, whom he loved to spend quality time with. Claudio loved being an older brother because it gave him respect and unconditional love. Claudio is survived also by His biological father Torrence Grissom Sr. and brother Torrence Grissom Jr. Baseball was one of Claudio’s many passions. From a young age, he began pursuing baseball with his cousin, Nicco. Both loved playing as it brought them closer together, along with the support of his Tio Alex, Claudio joined many leagues throughout his life and had a natural talent for the sport.. playing for the Brighton Park League which earned him a “Home Run King” title and where he became known to his fellow teammates as “Sledge”, short for sledgehammer, referring to the force had when hitting the baseball. During the season, Claudio enjoyed attending Chicago Cubs games with his family. Soccer also brought him joy as it was an important part of his relationship with his grandfather, Claudio Cossio. Both shared reports, highlights, and much more from international teams. When he was younger, Claudio preferred soccer and spent most of his childhood playing it. In grade school and high school, Claudio practiced his athleticism through soccer and basketball. Claudio met his girlfriend, Olivia Nunez, at Epiphany Catholic School. They met in kindergarten, but began dating in 7th grade and continued until the final day. Both shared many of the same interests and goals for the future. Many of Claudio’s milestones were spent with Olivia, from his first kiss to last kiss. Claudio will now live on through his daughter, Valeria Cossio. In 2018, he became a father with Erika Ávalos. While still growing up, Claudio was also learning how to raise a child. Valeria taught Claudio how to mature and become more responsible. Although Claudio was only a parent for a short time, he was a great father because he provided Valeria with his love and all his family’s love. The most important thing Claudio valued was family. From a young age, he was taught that no one will love you more than your family. It was his priority to make sure his family was happy and safe. From sharing laughs to hugs, Claudio loved creating memories with his family because he cherishes the memories with the family he lost. Claudio put others before himself. He never intended to upset others because he understood the meaning of pain at a young age. He lost family members and friends, which was a pain he could never heal from. Claudio wanted to make others feel comfort, joy, and happiness at home, school, and work. He always showed people compassion and empathy whenever he could, because he was a kind soul. Although Claudio didn’t express much of his pain, he expressed his love for others. He was happy on earth surrounded by the people who loved him. Due to the pandemic, Claudio Alejandro Cossio’s funeral service was a short intimate gathering of the immediate family. Despite the circumstances, the Cossio family has organized another service to celebrate the life of Claudio. Although the loss of Claudio Cossio was tragic, family and friends must cherish the beautiful memories he has left behind. On July 25th there will be a memorial service held for Claudio. The venue will hold 50 guests at a time, therefore there will be designated time slots for Claudio’s family and friends. As each guest leaves the venue, others will enter. For the memorial service, we ask all attendees to be respectful of the venue. Attendees have to be mindful of time by letting others enter in the venue because the capacity is limited.
