Eugene was raised in Maywood and Melrose Park alongside his brothers and sisters. He attended Stevenson Grade School and later graduated from Proviso East High School. Following graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army and served honorably during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He achieved the rank of Corporal as part of the 532nd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment, with assignments in Camp McGill, Japan, and Inchon, Korea. His service reflected a deep sense of duty and commitment to his country.
After returning home, Eugene began a long and dedicated career with the American Can Company in Maywood, where he worked for more than 30 years. Known for his strong work ethic, he spent many years working overtime shifts on the rail dock to support his family.
Eugene’s greatest joy in life was his family. He first met Louise “Red” in 1950, and their connection was immediate and lasting. Though their early relationship was interrupted by his military service overseas, Eugene never forgot her. Upon his return in 1953, Louise was there to greet him at Midway Airport, and they quickly resumed their courtship. Their shared love of time together—filled with laughter, dancing, and family—led to their marriage on March 6, 1954, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Melrose Park. They shared a devoted and loving marriage for 70 years and were blessed with two sons, Rik and Scott.
In 1956, Eugene and Louise purchased their first home on 17th Avenue in Melrose Park, where they raised their family and built a lifetime of memories. Following his retirement from American Can Company after 30+ years, Eugene continued to stay active by working with the Veterans Park District, managing facilities in Melrose Park (Bulger Park) and River Grove (Trumbull Park). He deeply valued the friendships and camaraderie he developed there, often sharing stories from those years.
Eugene was an avid and passionate sports fan, rarely missing an opportunity to cheer on the Chicago Bears, Cubs, and Blackhawks. He had unwavering confidence in his teams and took great pride in their successes—often engaging in spirited conversations about their prospects. He also enjoyed the occasional wager as part of his love for sports.
Eugene, preceded in death by his wife, Louise (d.2024), is lovingly remembered by his sons, Rik (Cindy) and Scott; his sisters-in-law, Arlene and Carol; his grandsons, Garrett (Michelle) and Ryan (Kristen); five great-granddaughters; his great-grandson Brody; and another great-grandchild expected later this fall. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1025 Lake Street, Melrose Park, on April 25, with visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m. followed by the service at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Eugene’s memory to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
