Rest in peace, Tia Martha. I will forever remember your beautiful smile and the warmth and peace you brought to those around you. My prayers are with the family.

I met Martha as a patient in the clinic. Although at the beginning it was a formal patient-doctor relationship, her warmth and sweetness quickly turned it into a friendship. She was my favorite patient and I knew she was going through a lot, so I didn’t hesitate to share my personal number with her in case she needed anything. 
She used to tell me how I was the best doctor because of that and that all my patients were lucky to have me. The truth is, I have only done that for her because I wanted to give her a helping hand as she navigated her health and I cared about her a lot.
We said goodbye in June 2025 when I moved from Chicago, but we would still call each other and she would share with me her updates. I always enjoyed her calls and hearing about how she was doing. She was sweet and caring with all the people she loved and appreciated, and I had the privilege to enjoy that side of her. 
Martha meant a lot to me and I’ll deeply miss her.  The love of her family has moved my heart and I’m sure she is resting in peace thanks to them. My most profound condolences to all her loved ones.

To my dear Tía Martha Marquez Juárez,
Around 3AM on January 31, 2026, as you made the transition into the next chapter of life into death into the next, you passed surrounded by loved ones. You now join our ancestors, and I pray you arrived gently, held by the same hands that have carried our family through generations.
You were born on February 23, 1951, and your life held both sweetness and weight. You lived through losses that shaped you early, your father passing in 1961, and the wound of a mother leaving. Those truths matter, not to define you, but to honor what you survived.
I honor you in full, without making the story neat, and without pretending it didn’t hurt. You were more than what happened to you. You were your own spirit, your own laughter, your own presence at the table. You were family, and a chapter of our lineage that will not be forgotten.
The bloodlines of Hidalgo and Querétaro are in you. La sangre no se rompe. La memoria vive en el cuerpo. En ti lived the strength of our people, the roots that keep us standing.
I also honor your oldest siblings, Aurora and Leonel, who helped hold the family together when everything broke, who brought the children to Chicago and did what they could with what they had. Ese amor callado cambia el futuro.
You are survived by your husband; your children Rogelio (Stephanie), Eduardo (Kelly), Gerardo, and Lupita (Freddy); nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; your siblings Leonel, Aurora, Etelvina, Sara, Josefina, Margarita, and Sergio; and so many nieces and nephews who carry pieces of you forward.
You were preceded in death by your parents, Leonel and Sara, and your son, José Manuel Jr. I pray that reunion is gentle, que sea un reencuentro lleno de paz, que por fin descanses sin peso.
