

Verdugo-Perez, Dr. Shirley Age 71, of Riverside, died Tuesday. She was born to the late Stanley and Victoria Krull, July 26, 1939, in Chicago, IL. Shirley graduated from Mundelein Cathedral High School and received a BA in Spanish from Clarke College, a Masters in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, a Masters in Guidance and Counseling from Northeastern University and a Ph.D in Education from Ohio State University. She was fluent in Spanish, Polish, Italian, French and English. She had been in the education field all her life, teaching students from kindergarten through graduate school. Shirley was a dedicated educator, teacher, and administrator until she retired from the Chicago Public School System, Board of Education and was passionate about making a difference in the lives of her students. She was a past treasurer and president for Latinos in Vocational Education that offered college scholarships to Hispanic students in the Chicago Pubic Schools. She was honored with two Fulbright scholarships in 1965 to Bogota, Columbia and in 1999 to Tokyo, Japan. Shirley was the Recording Secretary and an active member of the Polish National Alliance Lodge 825 in Cicero, IL. She loved travelling to new places, whether with her children or venturing out on her own. Shirley is survived by three children and took great pride in their higher education accomplishments of obtaining Masters degrees and a Law Degree: Gala Verdugo, of New York City; Mila Verdugo, of Chicago; and Jay Verdugo, of Chicago. She was looking forward to the birth of her first grandchild expected in June. A viewing will be held from 2-8 p.m Friday at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 7750 W. Cermak Rd., Forest Park. The Funeral Mass will occur at 10 a.m on Saturday at St. Mary's Church in Riverside followed by the entombment at Resurrection Cemetery.
