

JOANNE AHLFORS JUERGENS, 87, of Fort Wayne, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016, surrounded by her loving children. Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Eric Gustav and Helen Ruth (Wagoner) Ahlfors. She graduated from DeVilbiss High School and Toledo University. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, and participated in many sports including the Toledo Ski Club and the field hockey team. Joanne married Dr. Richard B. Juergens in 1950. The family moved to Fort Wayne in 1957. Joanne was a member of the Fort Wayne chapter of Psi Iota Xi, a philanthropic organization. She continued her love of sports through the years by teaching swimming to many area children. Joanne was a board member of the Fort Wayne YWCA. She was an avid gardener, and volunteered at the Botanical Conservatory. She was an active member of St. Joseph United Methodist Church for 59 years. She enjoyed singing in the church choir, traveling with Sounds of Hope throughout Europe, and learning to play the harp. Jo also did missionary work with her husband, Dick, in Rhodesia. She is survived by her children, Lindell Jo Juergens (David B. Kehoe), Dr. Erica J. Duggan (Dr. Donald Duggan), JulieAnn J. Shepherd, Rebecca M. Juergens (Carl Neis), Richard Bowman "Bo" Juergens, Jr. (Kimberly C.); and her sister, Patricia A. Hull. She was "Grandma Jo" to her grandchildren, Katherine and Connor Kehoe, Erin (Jon) Arvin, Carter Duggan, Becca (Ryan) Maddigan, Ross and Eric Shepherd, Kaitlyn and Rainer Neis, and Robert and Ryan Juergens. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Joanne was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Dr. Richard B. Juergens, and her grandson, Richard B. Juergens III. Memorial service is 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016, at St. Joseph United Methodist Church, 6004 Reed Road, Fort Wayne, with visitation one hour prior. Visitation will also be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2016 at Hockemeyer & Miller Funeral Home, 6131 St. Joe Road, Fort Wayne. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery.
