Leo Kenneth Meyer

LEO KENNETH MEYER, died from the effects of a long life, on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, 11:22 p.m., at the house of his son, Neil. At the age of 93, he had experienced much of the 20th and enough of the 21st century, along with an extensive curiosity for knowledge, to give an informed opinion on most matters. A World War II veteran of the Pacific Theatre, he never dwelt on the honors he received during that time, including two Bronze Stars, which most of his friends didn't know he possessed, or how he achieved them, but that was Leo. He spent his boyhood on a farm in Avilla with a large family of whom only one sister, Sister Anna Clare of Frankfort, Ill. and two brothers, James of Dayton, Ohio and Carl of Fort Wayne, remain. He went about his life quietly for the most part, unless he was instructing his three sons on how to use tools or shovel gravel or repair just about anything that may be broken. Beginning when he returned from the War until he retired, he worked in the electrical field for many different contractors and passed that knowledge along to his sons. Also surviving are his sons, Neil (Mary Berghoff) Meyer of New Haven, Mark (Elizabeth Smith-Meyer) Meyer of Fort Wayne and Gary (Juan M. Nieto-Meyer) Meyer of Houston, Texas; and three grandchildren, Jason Farren of Palmyra, Va., Alexandra Meyer of Fort Wayne and Ian Meyer of Fort Wayne. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan; brothers, Alphonse, Eugene, Walter, and Richard; sisters, Marguerite, Stella, and Rose; his father, Daniel Benedict; and his mother, Anna Louise. Anyone who would like to reminisce with the family about the personality that was distinctly Leo's, is invited to a service at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2011 at Hockemeyer & Miller Funeral Home, 6131 St. Joe Road with calling one hour prior. Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 24, 2011 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, preferred memorials are to Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home.
