Another "angel" from the class of 53 has joined the flock.Did not "run" with him but admired Bob & his "ham" buddies. He was well respected.

We felt like Bob was part of our family.Always looked forward to their trips to Texas to visit Branden,Angela and kidos.Bob always had a smile and that will be missed along with his warm hugs.Thank you for being such a good role model to our grandchildren.(your great grandchildren)Hunter told me that you were going to help Jesus grow broccoli in Heaven.I bet he's right.Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Bob was lifelong childhood friend of my father, Jim Walkinshaw.  Some excerpts from his autobiography:  "Kindergarten was a lot of fun as I remember.  It was at Fremont Elementary that I met Bob Shaw.  At that time, little did I know that we would have a long friendship that would follow".

While at Battle Creek Central HS:  "Doc Phares was the physics instructor and he also was a ham radio operator. The school had formed an amateur radio club and had a license, W8YN, with Doc being the advisor. Don Haddock and a couple of upper classmen were in the club. Bob Shaw, Jack Caldwell and I became interested in the activities and became members. We ultimately all got our licenses, W8JGA (Jack), B (Jim) and C (Bob).  We started as Novices and could only operate on code or high frequency voice.  All of us made small code transmitters for 80 meters.  3.715 mc was the crystal I had.   The transmitter was only a one tube, 6AG7 rig of about 5 watts.  The diagram came from QST the American Radio Relay League publication.  I made a small two tube receiver and that was the rig.  We talked to each other during the year of our Novice.  We all worked a few other stations.  It was great fun.  All of this created a bond that would hold the three of us and Don Haddock together as long term friends."  

Indeed.....I have many memories of my father talking to Bob over ham radio from our basement at 4625 Tenny St in Lansing.  And on Field Day (every June) Bob & Jack would frequent our farm in Holt, the 3 of them setting up a temporary station, stringing wires and getting on the air to make contacts. This hobby continued to bring them together every year, as recently as 2009.  Bob was a wonderful resource in the world of old electronics, no doubt his years at Magnavox served him well.  When my mother needed some assistance troubleshooting a homebrew security system Bob took the time to debug it last year.  If I ever needed a schematic or advice on a tube circuit Bob had the information and was able to help out.  

It was Bob who asked my father to go on double date with him and Shirley, the first meeting of my mother to be, Janet Rasmussen.  And for every year for as long as I can remember the Shaw's and Walkinshaw's have come together either in Ft Wayne or Holt, MI to play cards and ring in the New Year. Great memories, good friends.

Shirley, Dave and Pam,  my condolences on your loss.  Bob, W8JGC may be QRT and a silent key but he made an impact on our lives and was a good friend to all who knew him.  73,

Bob was a great guy.  Not only was he quite intelligent, he was friendly and liked by all who knew him.
We will miss his bright smile and thoughts of the many years of softball and monthly dinners with him.

Bob was always the quiet voice of reason when there was a product problem.
We worked closely together on the hand held radios to improve yields.
He was always open to any idea to improve the product for 
our troops.
I am sorry to see his passing.

Uncle Bob amazing man and had a smile for everyone. He will be missed by all that knew him. Love you Uncle Bob.

Cousin Bob was a gentleman (in his demeanor) and a scholar (majoring in Shaw genealogy). I enjoyed every encounter with him and learned plenty about the family, both in conversation and in the book he prepared. Every family needs gentlemen and scholars, and we were blessed to have both in Bob. All the Michigan clan will miss him greatly.

 Shirley, Brandon and Families - We did not get to know Bob very well, but we thoroughly enjoyed being with him when we did get the chance.  We loved the way he "took to"  all the Great-Grandkids when they moved up from Texas.  We hope all you good memories will help you through the sorrowful times ahead.
