Thomas Edward Byers, 73, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at his home with family by his side. Born November 2, 1945 in Fort Wayne, he was a son of the late Clarence Jr. and Kathryn (McCormick) Byers. A graduate of North Side High School, Tom continued his education at International Business College. He was a Field Auditor with the Indiana Department of Revenue for 42 years, from which he retired. After retirement, he was employed with Aramark Concessions, Inc., for 15 years. He was a former member of the Lions Club. A sports fanatic, he enjoyed Detroit Lions football and other local high school and college teams. Tom had a fun sense of humor, enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, and mall walking at Glenbrook. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Gwen (Thiel) Byers of Fort Wayne; daughters, Emily (Wayne Sweeney) Byers of Louisville, Ky., and Pamela (Joseph) Smiddy of Newburgh, Ind.; four grandchildren, Haley (Seth Vaughn) Gehring of Indianapolis, Patrick Sweeney of Louisville, Ky., and Cole and Katelyn Smiddy, both of Newburgh, Ind.; great-grandson, Bennett Vaughn of Indianapolis; sister, Susan (Dan) Smith of Sevierville, Tenn.; and nephews, David Goeglein and Dennis (Angie) Goeglein. Memorial Service will be 7:00pm on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Hockemeyer and Miller Funeral Home, 6131 St. Joe Rd., Fort Wayne, with calling one hour prior. Calling will also be from 1-4pm on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the funeral home.
