Dwight Truman Wilkins, age 89, of Colorado Springs, passed away peacefully on Sunday April 2, 2023. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Rosemarie (King) Wilkins; their daughter Kathleen Egan and husband Robert; two sons Gregory Wilkins and wife Dianne, and David Wilkins and wife Teresa; four Grandsons: Aaron Wilkins, Geoffrey Wilkins, Nicholas Wilkins and Jacob Wilkins; and many nieces and nephews.
He was born on June 14, 1933 in Cleveland, OH to Marian (Pease) and Harry Blood. His father Harry passed away when Dwight was just three years old. After some time, his mother Marian re-married Chester Wilkins. Together they raised Dwight and his two sisters Phyllis and Patricia in Erie, PA. Dwight later changed his last name to Wilkins in honor of his step father.
As a young man, he enlisted in the US Navy where he honorably served 4 years Active Duty aboard the Aircraft Carrier the USS Hornet. During this time he traveled to many destinations around the world. When he returned home, it wasn’t too long before he met the love of his life, Rosemarie. They were married a short time later. Dwight re-enlisted as Active Duty in the US Naval Reserve, where he proudly served his country and ran Naval Reserve Recruitment and Training Centers, and eventually retired as a Chief Petty Officer after 26 years of service. After his Navy career, he pursued a lifelong dream of going back to school and earning his degree. He attended the University of Southern Colorado and achieved a Bachelors of Business Administration. He then went on to work for the US Postal Service and retired from there after 15 years.
Dwight had many passions, including a love for sports, music, dancing, travel, and all things related to the Sea. He loved baseball and football, and was an avid Rockies and Broncos fan. He played golf for most of his life, once hitting a “hole in one”! He was also an avid bowler for many years, playing in leagues with friends and co-workers. He enjoyed attending live music concerts. But the greatest joys in his life were his love and devotion to his wife Rosemarie; having fun with Kathy and Bob; traveling to Missouri, Texas, California, and trips to “the Beach House” all to share time with their children and grandchildren; and his faith in Our Lord Jesus Christ. He spent much of his life serving the Catholic Church, as a Lectern and Eucharistic Minister; he became a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and loved singing in the church choir.
He was a beautiful man with a big heart and an infectious laugh! He loved his family, relatives, friends, neighbors, and community! He will be greatly missed, and live on in all our hearts and memories!
