

He was born May 21, 1942 in Sayre, PA the son of the late George and Rose Barrowcliff.
Merton, a veteran of Vietnam, served two tours as a member of the 359th Transportation Company. He received several decorations and medals which included the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Purple Heart, Meritorious Unit Citation, Humanitarian Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal with 7th Award, and the Overseas Service Ribbon.
Mert talked a lot about his time in Vietnam and proudly participated in parades with his 359th brothers and was a member of the VFW and American Legion.
Mert’s passions were working on cars, rebuilding small engines and working in his garden.
Mert was preceded in death by his parents, several brothers and sisters, his daughter Belinda, son Vincent, granddaughter Ashley and great grandson Connor. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Linda, daughters Tammy (John) Longland, Robin (Brian) Hines, Kim (Bill) Dumas, Terry Forbes, three grandsons, three granddaughters, and nine great grandchildren. Brother Frank (Pat) Barrowcliff and sister Nellie Ruth (Sam) Franklin.
His family has organized a memorial service to honor Mert’s life which will be held on March 18, 2023 at 1pm at Legacy Wesleyan Church, 502 N. Walnut Street, Colorado Springs CO 80905.
Later in the year Mert will be taken home to Pennsylvania for a full military funeral. It will take place at Lowery Funeral Home, 225 S. Main St. #2, Athens, PA 18810 on June 17, 2023 at 1 pm. At a later time he will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery per his wishes.
