

Robert A. (Bob) Shute passed away on February 14, 2024 - with family at his bedside following a short illness. Bob is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth L (Becky) Shute, his daughters Bonnie J Shute-Brigilia and Brenda J. Allen (David), Karrie E. Thomison, and bonus daughter Sharon M. Gann (Bradford). He is also survived by his grandchildren Ramin Shute-Mahini, Anastasia M. Lancaster, Kylie Thomison, step granddaughter Sara Allen and bonus grandchildren Brendan Gann, Stefanie Gann Lee (Nathan), Derek Gann, and Siobhan Gann. He is survived by one brother Merle (Skip) Strout (Muriel) and several nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by parents Merle D. Shute and Alice Wilder Shute, sisters Pauline George, Cynthia Slack, and brothers Lawrence and Roland Shute. He was affectionately known as Opa, Grandpa, GB, and Pop.
Bob was born July 28,1933 in Unity, New Hampshire and graduated from Stephens High School in Claremont, NH in 1954. Following graduation, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army and obtained the rank of First Sergeant before his retirement in 1984. Bob served in Korea, Vietnam and four tours to Germany and was the recipient of the Bronze Star and Legion of Merit. Bob enjoyed skiing (both downhill and cross-country), snow shoeing and golf both before and after retirement.
Bob was an avid Volksmarcher for several years resulting in over 1,272 miles biked and nearly 13,000 miles walked through the course of 2,052 events. He was a member of the Rocky Mountain Wanderers serving as Trailmeister for the 2003 National Convention in Colorado, the Falcon Wanderers, the Cheyenne High Plains Wanderers and the Colorado High Country Hikers. He and his wife walked somewhere in all 50 states once and over half again.
A memorial service will be held at Dove-Witt Funeral Home at 6630 S U.S. Hwy 85 87 in Fountain, CO on 26 February at 10:30 AM followed by a 12 PM graveside service with full military honors at Pikes Peak National Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Dove-Witt Funeral Home on 23 February from 3-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Honor Flight Network to support veteran visits to D.C. at honorflightsoco.net or to Trinity Community Park, an inclusive playground for all ages being constructed in Monument, CO at https://trinitymonument.org/trinity-community-park. A special thanks to Pikes Peak Hospice, Bob’s nurse Sandy and CNA Olivia who helped with Bob’s transition to his next life.
A visitation for Bob will be held Friday, February 23, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Dove-Witt Family Mortuary, 6630 S. US HWY 85/87, Fountain, CO 80817. A funeral service will occur Monday, February 26, 2024 from 10:30 AM to 11:15 AM at Dove-Witt Family Mortuary.
