Theresa Marie Cooper (nee Conrad) passed away on August 17, 2020 after her second battle with cancer. She is survived by her loving husband, Mitchell Cooper, and devoted son, Joshua Cooper, both of Colorado Springs, as well as her caring brother, Scott Conrad, of Chicago, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Rosemarie Conrad, both of Chicago, IL.
Theresa was accepted into an extended family that included Mitchell’s parents, Verble Ray and the late Marian Cooper, daughters Shannon Reavis (Dustin) and their children Grace, Lorne and Lee, and the late Amber Ewe (Edward) and their son Aiden, as well as Edward’s new wife Elizabeth and their son Owen. Also, Mitch’s son Brian Cooper (Rebecca) and their children Makenzie Benedict, Amber and Claire, and Makenzie’s mother, Lana. Theresa was also very fond of Scott’s girlfriend, Clara, whom she asked to take care of her baby brother on occasion after her cancer diagnosis. Theresa was loved by many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Theresa chose to pursue a career in the United States Army. She had numerous assignments which included Germany, Panama, and various stateside posts. She was a Drill Sergeant and Senior Drill Sergeant while stationed at Fort McClellan, AL. Her last assignment took her to Fort Carson, CO, where she was First Sergeant, 148th Military Police Company. After a career spanning more than two decades, she retired with the rank of First Sergeant (E-8).
After retiring from the Army, Theresa began a new career as a paralegal. She was employed by the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office in Colorado Springs for twenty years. During her tenure there, she worked with the following teams: Major Crimes, Homicide, Economic Crime, and Special Victims Unit.
Theresa had early aspirations of becoming a veterinarian, which was evident in her love for anything furry, including her dogs Ali and Holly, and her previous pups Nugget and Riley. An avid sports fan, she was a dedicated supporter of the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Blackhawks, but didn’t have anything nice to say about the Cubs. A sports memorabilia collector, she was known to have stalked certain players for that elusive autograph or photo op, having been known to wait patiently outside of hotel entrances. She was also known to have jumped around after chasing down her son’s first homerun ball, as well as the time she was thrown out of the game by the umpire after arguing balls and strikes from the stands. She could be found each spring at the White Sox training facility in Glendale, AZ.
A memorial service to cherish Theresa’s life will be held at Dove-Witt Family Mortuary, 6630 S. US Hwy 85/87, Fountain, CO, 80817, on August 31, 2020 at 11:00a. She will be buried at Pikes Peak National Cemetery, 10545 Drennan Road, Colorado Springs, CO, 80925, at 2:00p that same day. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Theresa’s honor to any cancer related cause, or to the giraffes at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.
