Alfred was born in Philadelphia and raised in Washington, DC. He is the son of the late Alfred Henry Johnson II of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Thelma Holland Johnson of Winston Salem, North Carolina and brother of the late Thelma Johnson Montgomery (Jan 17, 2015).
He leaves behind his son Richard Johnson and wife Maria of New Jersey. His daughter Laura Bennett and husband Bernard and granddaughters Taylor and Sadie of California. His daughter Lorraine Johnson and granddaughter Shaniqua of New Jersey and grandson David of Florida. His nephew Alfred Montgomery and wife Cecily E. Collier-Montgomery and their daughters Meagan, Alexina, Yasiman and Cecily Imani and husband Reza. Nephew Mark Montgomery and niece Ruth Montgomery of Washington, DC. His cousin Rick Holland and wife Phyllis and their daughter Ashley of Texas and former spouse Gloria Taylor Johnson of Florida.
Colonel Johnson is a WWII veteran who enlisted in 1943 at age 17 and was a Sergeant in the 138th Military Police Battalion. He was Honorably Discharged in1946. He graduated Howard University and became a commissioned Army officer thru the Howard University ROTC in 1951. Colonel Johnson is a Korean War veteran with 2 tours of duty as well as a Vietnam veteran with 2 tours of duty. Colonel Johnson wore the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, and Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Vietnamese Honor Medal 1st Class, and the Cross of Gallantry with Palms. Colonel Johnson is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College and the Army War College. Col Johnson retired from the Army in 1977 after 30 years of service and created TechDyn Systems a consulting firm from where he eventually retired after 15 years.
Alfred was an accomplished artist, photographer and a lover of all genres of music and a voracious reader of all literature. An ardent Civil War buff, Alfred made pilgrimages to many of the major battlefields and also visited nearly all of the nation’s National Parks.
You who know Alfred know that he is a good man who enjoyed solitude and independence. Alfred is receiving his well-earned eternal rest. He will be lovingly remembered by all.
Service is to be held at the National Cemetery, Quantico, VA. March 27 2015 at 10:00am due to demand for National Cemetery interment.
