Barbara Anne Guhl, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend, passed away on December 18th. Born on April 11, 1942, to Barbara and William Ash, in Stamford, Connecticut, Barbara Ash entered the world alongside her twin brother, Bill, and grew up with her older brothers Arnold and Ed. Her childhood in Stamford shaped her with a strong sense of family, faith, and determination—qualities that would define her entire life.
Barbara met the love of her life, Jeff Guhl, at a church youth group, and the two quickly became inseparable. They dated throughout high school and college. After graduating from Stamford High School, Barbara earned her associate degree from the Forsythe School of Dental Hygiene at Tufts University, beginning a long and dedicated career as a dental hygienist.
On July 4, 1964, Barbara and Jeff married while Jeff was serving in the Navy, beginning a lifelong journey together that took them to many places across the country. No matter where they lived, Barbara created a warm and welcoming home for their three children—Joanne, Jon, and Mike—and for the many friends they made along the way.
Although she lived in various locations throughout her life, Barbara spent most of her adult years in Manassas, Virginia and Haymarket, Virginia, before retiring to Wilmington, North Carolina. In every community she joined, Barbara found friends, purpose, and joy.
One of her greatest passions was golf. Barbara loved the game not just for the competition, but for the camaraderie, the fresh air, and a good walk. She was a formidable player—many time club champion at Evergreen Country Club in Haymarket and Pine Valley Country Club in Wilmington—and she cherished the friendships and memories made on the course. She also enjoyed her time volunteering for The First Tee of Wilmington, sharing the game she loved with disadvantaged children.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Jeff, daughter Joanne and her brothers Arnold and Billie. She is survived by her twin sons Jon (Heather) and Mike (Joan), her brother Ed (Tina) her 5 grandchildren (Justin, Jocelyn, Katherine, Lauren, Jack) and all those who were fortunate enough to know her kindness, humor, and unwavering spirit.
Barbara’s life was defined by love—love for her family, her friends, her work, and the game that brought her so much happiness. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A Celebration of Life will be held in her honor on January 17th, 2026, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg, VA at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that you consider a donation to The First Tee of Wilmington.
