Catherine Virginia Smith Pitts

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Catherine Virginia Smith Pitts, who left this world on February 27, 2026, at the age of 93, surrounded by her loving family in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Catherine was born on November 4, 1933, to William “Willy” Smith and Emma Butchyard Smith. She leaves behind her two sons Jeffrey “Butch” Pitts and Mark Pitts (Dwendy), son-in-law Bernie Sullivan, six grandchildren Jennifer Beland (Mike), Jason Sullivan, Olivia Pitts, Taylor Pitts, Camryn Karic (Kerim), and Dylan Pitts (Kristy), as well as five great-grandchildren Madison, Jordan, Kyleigh, Aubrey, and TK.

Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Shirley Smith and Marion Smith Sweyart, and her beloved daughter Deborah “Debbie” Sullivan.

Catherine worked many years and retired twice from Mary Washington Hospital. However, her greatest achievement in her life was her family and she would tell each and every one of them that she loved them at every opportunity!

She will be deeply missed by all that knew her and loved her.

In lieu of services, the family is planning a celebration of Catherine's life to be held in spring 2026, which will also honor the memory of her late daughter Debbie.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her honor to Mary Washington Hospital Foundation.
