I am greatly saddened upon hearing about her passing. I knew Cheryl from graduate school. It was always a great pleasure to be in her company. And what an awesome smile she had! My most heartfelt condolences for the family. Rest in peace, Cheryl.

Very sad to hear of this.  Have many great memories of swimming and hanging out with her back in the old College Park days.

I was deeply saddened by the untimely death of Cheryl, as one of her former students at UMW she played a large part in helping me to develop my writing skills as well as to grow into a better student. 
Her compassion, dedication, drive, and enthusiasm was apparent in all of the classes she taught, and with just about everything she did. 
It is a terrible loss for her family, and a tragedy that she will no longer be apart of the University, except in memory. 
I will miss Cheryl, as her door was always open, to help with anything she was asked to.

What a sudden and sad loss for us all!  Cheryl was always a bright spot of intelligence and common sense, a dedicated faculty member and mother, which she balanced beautifully.  The last time I saw her, she gave a fine presentation at the Writing Intensive workshop - up to her usual quality of good humor, wonderful organization, and valuable information.  She will be sorely missed around UMW - and, I'm more than sure, at home. I'm sadden to hear the passing of Cheryl.  She was my favorite professor at UMW.  I always found a way to take one of her classes throughout my time at UMW.  She had a true love to educate and widen individual's mind.  She also had a way to correlate her curriculum and the love for her children.  I send my blessings to you all.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Cheryl, my thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time. I am currently enrolled in one of her classes and have had her for a few more, she has left a huge impression on me and my writing, I loved and will miss hearing the stories about her children and her dog, she will be truly missed.

Prof. H helped me so much this past year.  She also brought her "puppy" into my store a lot for various things.  All of the associates who knew her will miss her very much.  I will miss her candid humor and entertaining lectures. She was one of my favorites!

Words will never accurately capture the sense of loss I felt when learning of Cheryl's passing. She was generous to all she touched, and she made lives better through her work, friendships, and love. She left us too soon, but the memories of everything she did and what she meant will endure.

I was so sad to hear of Cheryl's passing. I met Cheryl while I was working for a local dentist in town. We found out that we grew up not far from each other in California and that I had gone to school with her brother. My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this time of sadness.

I was completely shocked and saddened to hear about Dr. Hawkinson-Melkun's passing. This summer class was only the second time I had her as teacher but in that short time she left a lasting impression. The personal experiences she spoke of in class showed she loved her family, loved her job, took pride in helping all current and past students, and was just an overall good person.

I was stunned and saddened to hear of Cheryl's passing.  I met her shortly after she started the Writing Center at the Stafford Campus of University of Mary Washington.  Had the privilege of working for her and getting to know her over the course of several years.  She was always a kind, thoughtful person who enjoyed working with students.  She will be very missed.

I had the privilege of knowing Cheryl as my professor in two classes and through The Writing Center while matriculating at UMW â€“ College of Business.  I am shocked by the news and saddened for not just those left at UMW who will greatly miss her, but also for those who will not have the opportunity to know Cheryl.  She had compassion for people, including her students, and a gentle but firm way of trying to make us better people.  Even when I would run into her en route to class or during a break, she would always take the time to render some kind words and her usual warm smile which will never be forgotten.  I hope Cheryl's family members can take comfort at some point in knowing that Cheryl really did make a difference at the University and she made a difference in my life.  Please know she was always very proud of her kids, being a swim team mom, and would share some of these humorous stories with the class through the lens of that great mother's pride.  This is a huge loss for both the family and the school.

Mike and I were shocked and saddened to read about Cheryl's passing in today's paper. Memories come to mind of her absolute love for her children and family (we had many conversations about them!), year around and summer swim meets, and her willingness to serve on the Stingray board while pursuing her advanced degree and teaching in the evenings. She had such energy and always, always had a smile on her face! Our thoughts and prayers are with you all, Charlotte, Jared, Hannah and Keith.
