He is predeceased by his father, Daryl McClung, Sr. and his mother, Helga McClung.
He concluded his journey on this Earth and traveled home on March 24th, 2022 and is survived by his brother, Roger McClung and his son, Daryl (Scott) McClung, as well as Scott’s wife, Stacie, and their four children: Grace Lewis and her husband Jacob Lewis, Lydia McClung, Elijah McClung, and Anna-Claire McClung.
Daryl graduated from the Augusta Military Academy in 1961 and went on to graduate from Virginia Military Institute in the spring of 1965 with an undergraduate degree in History.
Daryl joined the Marine Corp in December of 1965, where he went on to have a twenty year military career. During his career, he was part of presidential helicopter squadron HMX1 and had the privilege of flying with Presidents Nixon and Ford. He also flew medevac and resupply in Vietnam in squadron HMH-363, known as “The Lucky Red Lions,” where he risked his life day upon day ensuring the safety of his fellow comrades.
Over the course of his service, Daryl accumulated numerous medals and awards for his bravery and dedication to service. These awards include the Navy Commendation Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Presidential Service Badge, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with four stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Gallantry Cross Color. Daryl dedicated his life to the service of his country, and was proud of the United States until his end.
Daryl was known by all for his generosity. He freely gave of his resources and his time to anyone who needed it, and he rarely missed a family event. He was a faithful and adoring grandfather and supportive father. He was an avid history buff who loved folk and patriotic music, western movies, traveling, and boating. He was also a faithful member of the “Chicken Shack” gang, and spent many years fishing and camping in the woods along the Rappahannock River.
Daryl was an excellent writer and caused many a tear with his endearing letters and cards. In his later years, Daryl’s presence at the Lighthouse Academy of Fredericksburg as the students’ beloved “Pops” and as a teacher of auto mechanics blessed the many children who got to know him. Daryl’s contributions to the school and its students will forever be a part of its legacy.
As we remember Daryl’s life, his family would like to invite anyone who has memories of Daryl to share those stories via email, text message, or phone call.
Daryl’s family will be hosting a Celebration Of Life open house on May 14th from 11am to 3pm at 8141 Linden Dr, King George Va, and invites all of Daryl’s friends, family, and acquaintances to come celebrate his life.
Daryl (who is affectionately called “Popop” and “Pops”) requested the gathering to be casual and lighthearted, and his family would like to honor those wishes. There will be space for everyone to record their memories of Daryl, and his family requests anyone who has pictures of him to please bring copies of those photos for their comfort and remembrance.
