David Lee Sanders Jr. 77, departed to his heavenly home on Friday, July 1, 2022. David was born to the late David and Lela Horne Sanders, June 1, 1945, in Farmville, NC, where he spent most of his early years.
David Sanders attended Pitt County public school in Farmville, NC. David came to Washington, DC around 1964 where he learned the trade of laying carpet. He started out taking measurements and giving estimates for carpet installation. He later went on to become an entrepreneur subcontracting with several crews. As time went on David downsized the business. David Sanders really enjoyed and honed his craft. He could place an invisible seam in carpet like none other. David was a hard worker and continued in his field of work until he retired in 2007. Even though he was a man of few words, when he spoke, you knew he meant business.
David’s love of fishing was so infectious that he would convince everyone he knew to go fishing at least once. He taught most of his children and grandchildren how to fish and to ride a bike. David liked football, and his favorite team was the Washington Redskins (now the Washington Commanders). However, he loved to play baseball. He was known for playing the position of third base, shortstop, and outfield with the local DC Yankees Baseball Team. David also enjoyed listening to music of all genres as well as spending time with his family and friends.
David always had a love for the Lord and fully gave his life to Christ at the appointed time later in life. His favorite Scripture was the Lord’s Prayer, Matthew 6:9-13. Even after his health began to fail, he would recite the prayer which was written on the tablet of his heart.
David leaves to carry on his legacy: wife, Ernestine Sanders; sons, Anthony (Robbin) Burt of Springfield, VA, and Timothy "Salim" (Salma) Burt of Laurel, MD; daughters, Nancy (John) Green-Singleton, of Ocala, FL, Sharon McConney of Wilson, NC, LaTanya Sanders of Winston Salem, NC, DaShaunda Sanders of Stafford, VA.
David also leaves his sister, Christine Sanders of Washington, DC as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and special friends to cherish his memory. David is preceded in death by his sister Virginia "Jean" Westry, brothers, Rev. John "Bud" Horne, Alfred Sanders, Charlie Sanders, Linwood Sanders, and Jimmy Sanders.
