

Born 25 July 1928 in Louisville, Kentucky to Sylvester J. Loew and Virginia L (Crowley) Loew.
Earl, a Veteran of World War II, enlisted in the Navy at the end of the war, where he spent five years in various locations in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, flight training at Pensacola; re-enlisting at the outbreak of the Korean War. Upon honorable discharge from the Navy, he obtained an associates’ degree the University of Louisville; a Bachelor’s degree from Marietta College, and a master’s degree from The Ohio Sate University.
Earl pursued several career paths over the years; mechanical engineering with General Electric, Appliance Park, KY, relocating his family to Marietta, Ohio where he worked for Remington Rand; and Sperry Univac, Reno, OH.
Earl taught engineering manufacturing at the Washington Technical College, and at Tri-Valley Technical at Nelsonville, Ohio. He substitute taught in the Warren Local School district. Lt Col Loew was active in the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), teaching Aerospace Education and Leadership at the Wood County Airport as part of the CAP component of the West Virginia Wing. His efforts earned national recognition for teaching aerospace education with the CAP.
Earl worked as a Federal Employee for Rickenbacker Air Force Base and Defense Construction Supply Center, Columbus, OH. After his retirement, Earl supported Norma at the Heritage Learning Center in Marietta.
In 2013, Earl and Norma relocated to Fredericksburg, VA to be closer to their family.
Married to Norma Cundiff on 10 October 1952, for almost sixty-nine years Earl and Norma remained committed to each other.
Earl remained focused on building character and developing leadership in the students he educated, imparting the discipline of solving problems from engineering to art and psychology to construction, design and manufacturing.
Raising two sons who attended and graduated from Warren Local HS, followed by subsequent admission, graduation and commissioning from the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. His ability to shape, build, create character and enforce standards translated to success for his family and to the many people who came in contact with Dick and Norma.
Survived by their two sons, Stephen Gregory Loew and Michael Richard Loew, his wife, Patricia Ann (Nehl) Loew; his granddaughter, Jessica Michelle (Loew) Del Toro and her husband Christopher Del Toro; his great-grand daughter, Lilly Elise Del Toro; his grandsons, Michael Robert Loew, Christopher Richard Loew, CPT Matthew Richard Loew, SGT Alexander Patrick Loew, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Cundiff Loew; his father, Sylvester J Loew; his mother, Virginia; his brother Donald Loew; and his two sisters Jean and June.
Both Earl and Norma attended St Mary’s Catholic Church, Marietta; St Ambrose, Little Hocking, OH and St. Mary Immaculate of Fredericksburg Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association. Burial with military honors will be at the Quantico National Cemetery on 25 June 2021 at 2:00pm. Mullins & Thompson are handling the funeral arrangements.
