Frances Talley Hughes, 90, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, died Thursday, July 21, following a long illness. She was one of seven daughters of the late Etta and Frank Talley of Randleman, NC. She was born in Randleman, NC, on April 13, 1921. Educated in the Randleman school system, she went on to graduate from UNC at Greensboro in 1943. She married George Daniel Hughes, Sr. in June of 1945. Mrs. Hughes taught elementary school for many years. She and her husband with her son George Jr., and daughter Lynne Ellen also lived in San Juan (Puerto Rico), Bogota (Colombia), Newington (Connecticut), Buffalo (New York), and Greensboro (North Carolina) before settling down in the Fredericksburg area in 1972. While living in Fredericksburg, she worked with the Fredericksburg 4-H Extension Service. One of her favorite past times was playing bridge and she attained the rank of Grand Master in the 1980s. She was a member of the Retired Officers Club and an active Volunteer of the Mary Washington Hospital Women’s Auxiliary. Surviving are her son, George Daniel Hughes, Jr. and daughter-in-law Margene of King George, her daughter, Lynne Ellen Buker and son-in-law Rick of King William, Va., three sisters: Dot Williams of Winston-Salem, NC, Ruth Sherman of Wilson, NC, and Mary Upton of Clinton, NC; four grandchildren: Daniel Hughes (and his wife Elizabeth) of Williamsburg, VA, Kyla Johnson Sine (and her husband Eric) of Winchester, VA, Timothy Jack Hughes, and Christopher Hughes, both of King George. She is survived by one great grandson, Brock Sine (age 3) of Winchester, Va. Family and friends visitation will be at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel on Friday, July 29, at 7pm and Saturday, July 30, at 10:00am. There will be a memorial service at 11am led by Pastor Guy Mattox, Pastor Scott Roberts, and Pastor Lytle Buckingham. Interment will occur at Quantico National Cemetery, VA, at a later date. The family requests any gifts and donations be given to the Fredericksburg Christian School Capital Fund (9400 Thornton Rolling Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22408) and the American Cancer Society.
