Gary was born on January 6, 1955 in Baltimore, MD. He relocated to Virginia where he lived the majority of his life. He was a skilled brick layer, and later transitioned to transportation work, which he enjoyed.
He was an exceptionally talented musician. He played the banjo, acoustic and electric guitar, and keyboards. He created his own recording studio and delighted in hosting jam sessions with friends, family, and fellow musicians. He proudly displayed his Rolling stones tattoo. He especially appreciated the joy of spending time in the company of friends and family, and his furry loyal companion, Dixie Dog in his decked-out garage just sitting, chatting around the pool table, and playing music. Never giving up on life, he bought a Harley Davidson so he could ride up until he couldn’t any longer.
Gary was especially happy to be reunited with his children when they were adults. He had a great sense of humor, was kind hearted, and thoughtful. He treated family like best friends, and best friends like family. He will be missed my many.
He is survived by his children, Angela Dilley, and Gary Dilley, Jr.; his 7 grandchildren, Ron Martin III, Briana Harrell, Alaina Harrell, Sierra Harrell, Madysen Dilley, Macylen Dilley, and Grayden Dilley; his brother-in-law, John “Fred” Swanson; his neice, Kimbery (Joe) Hannahs; his great nephew, John Hannahs; his great nieces, Amanda Shelton, and Kayla Pote; many loving cousins, and lifelong friends; and his beloved dog, Dixie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Pearl Dilley; his sister, Norma Swanson; his niece, Paula Patton; and his nephews, Jake Pote, and Douglas Pote.
A tribute to Gary’s life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
