

John Duff Calderwood, 74, of Stafford, peacefully departed this life, Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at Stafford Hospital, after a long and courageous battle with an extended lung disorder. Born July 31, 1941 to Benjamin Franklin Calderwood and Edna Clark Calderwood, John grew up in Washington, D.C. Dianne D. Calderwood, his loving wife of 52 years, survives him.
John attended Randolph Macon Academy, in Front Royal, VA and apprenticed as a carpenter before beginning his 42-year career with United Air Lines as an Air Freight Agent on July 13, 1961. He worked with United in Atlanta, Georgia from 1961-1979 and, in 1979 transferred with his family to California, where he continued with United’s Los Angeles’ operations, until 1986. Preferring the East coast, he and his wife transferred to the new Dulles, Virginia operations, where he worked until his March 1, 2002 retirement.
John was devoted to his wife, Dianne, and honed his carpentry skills through the years with many additions, remodels, barns, fences and other wood-working projects. His other passion was his Esmont, Virginia family farm, where he shared many memories with his children and grandchildren, hunting, fishing and working on farm projects.
Survivors include sister Gail C. Thompson (Major) of Farmville, Virginia; his wife, Dianne, three children, Teri Nelson (Harris Butler) of Richmond, Virginia, Robert A. Calderwood (Vicki) of Norfolk, Virginia and Karen E. Dodson (Lee) of Placentia, California; grandchildren Michael E. Calderwood, Gabriel A. Morettini (Kelly), Ashley N. Zavala (Paul), Jonathan D. Calderwood, Megan C. Dodson, Brittany D. Morettini, Nicole A. Gonyeau (Bryan), Dulio J. Morettini, R. Allen Calderwood, Jr., Kyle R. Dodson and Bridget E. Calderwood; great-grandchildren Willow R. Morettini, Memphis Jo Morettini, and Connor F. Gonyeau; nieces and nephews Jerry Thompson, Wanda Thompson and Kari Thompson, widow of nephew Ricky Thompson.
A memorial service will be held at Zoar Baptist Church, 11036 Elk Run Road, Catlett, Virginia at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2015. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to pulmonary research or your favorite charity. Friends and family are invited to fellowship following the service at the home of John and Dianne.
