After graduating George Washington Pharmacy school, he was drafted into the army and served his country as a pharmacist/medic in the 137th medical detachment in the Korean War. He made a huge contribution to his unit and was praised by his Commanding Officer for correcting all discrepancy and bringing the pharmacy up to the highest level of effectiveness and order. After his commitment with the military, he continued to work as a pharmacist for over 50 years, faithfully serving the public.
He was happiest when working his land and enjoyed the peace and quiet he created at home. He loved to share stories from the past, making us all laugh. He was loyal to his family and close friends, and he imparted wisdom and helped us grow through his kindness and generosity. He worshiped at Zion United Methodist church and could be seen sitting in his usual spot every Sunday. He had a deep love for animals and kept a watchful eye out for the wildlife.
He is survived by his four children, John M. Heller III, Cheryl Murphy, Wendy Atkinson, and Cindy Jones; five grandchildren, Hannah, Lauren, Emily, Samuel, and Jerod and one great grandchild, Paul.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence and Hazel Heller and sister, Hazel Bowling. He was deeply proud of and devoted to his parents and was quick to praise them when talking about them.
The family will receive friends on Monday, September 6, 2021 at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel from 4-6:00 pm. A private graveside service will be held in Trinity Memorial Gardens, Waldorf, MD.
