With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to Patricia Swanson Linder who departed this world on January 4, 2024. Pat was born on July 31, 1946 to Herbert Lee Swanson and Nona Swanson. Pat's life was a testament to the power of love, compassion, an unwavering commitment to family, and one of the many phrases that she left with us: "invite everyone."
Pat spent her formative years in the coastal town of Manhattan Beach, CA, growing up amidst the sun, sea, and the warmth which she carried with her throughout life. She attended Mira Costa High School, Stephens College, and the University of Arizona. Her journey, marked by a spirit of inclusivity that radiated from her like a beacon, took her from the shores of her hometown to the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. While she wore many hats and impacted multiple communities during her travels and military moves with the love of her life, Roy Lee Linder, Jr. they settled in Manassas, VA where Pat served as the stable manager and director of youth activities at Marine Corps Base Quantico. In retirement in King George, VA, you could find Pat with her horses, on her tractor, in her garden, or around the pool with the joyous sounds of her loving family and friends.
As the matriarch of the Linder family, Pat personified the values of unity, compassion, and the understanding that family extends beyond blood ties. Her love knew no bounds, encompassing not only her husband of 56 years, Lee Linder, Jr., and their children - Terri Feden-Deane (Eric Deane), Aimee Linder, Scott (Sarah) Linder, and Michelle (Chad) Merica - but also a wide circle of friends, acquaintances, and anyone in need of a kind word or a helping hand. She was a fierce advocate for those she loved and always found the right balance between a listening ear and a guiding thought.
Her legacy will forever be carried in the hearts of her grandchildren - JJ (Carol) Feden, Chris Feden, Shane Feden, Meghan Murphy, Lexi Murphy, Shea Murphy, Hailey Linder, Hannah Linder, Jason Linder, Harper Linder, Virginia Merica, Charlotte Merica, and Alexandria Merica. Pat created a special connection with each of her grandchildren across varied activities including art, music, and athletics. Her influence on their lives was immeasurable, leaving behind a treasure trove of memories that will be cherished for generations.
In addition to the many people Pat loved, her heart extended to the animal kingdom, especially her dogs, cats, and horses. Her love for animals was a reflection of her nurturing spirit and the kindness that defined her character.
Whether in the company of friends, family, or her beloved animals, Pat's open-hearted approach to life created a legacy of warmth and acceptance. Long chats over wine, shared desserts, books, travels, and the companionship of her dogs, cats, and horses were all woven into the memories we will carry forward. As a volleyball player throughout her youth and adulthood, she maintained a love for athletics and ensured every Washington Redskins, UVa Cavaliers, and JMU Dukes game was on her calendar. The breadth and depth of her varied interests were all woven into the fabric of a life well-lived!
As we mourn the loss of a remarkable woman, let us also celebrate the light she brought into the world and strive to carry forward the spirit of inclusivity, fierce advocacy, compassion, and love that Pat so beautifully exemplified. May her soul rest in eternal peace and her influence guide us all forward.
