Dr. Gary Glenn Long

He was married to Elaine (Stickney) Long on December 24, 1968, in Boulder, Colorado.

Gary graduated from Lewis High School, Lewis, KS; received a B.S. from Kansas State University in 1963; a M.S. from the University of Nebraska in 1966; and a Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1971, where he conducted research on developing an elm tree resistant to Dutch Elm disease.

Dr. Long was an Associate Professor, Department of Horticulture, University of Missouri for eighteen years, a horticultural consultant and nurseryman until he retired. In 1983, he received the Missouri Association of Nurserymen’s highest honor and award: Nurseryman of the Year. The award is given to individuals for their outstanding contribution to the industry. This was only the fourth such award given in Missouri. It is not given on a yearly basis.

Gary was an avid gardener, ambitious reader, antique tractor enthusiast, and maintained a herd of Shorthorn cattle.

Mr. Long is survived by his wife, Elaine; son, Wayne Long (Casey); son, Bruce Long (Sabrina); grandchildren, Allie and Landon Long.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, LeRoy Long, Donald Long, and Maurice “Butch” Long, and nephew Casey Clair. He is survived by sisters, Shirley Busby of Midwest City, OK; Mary Ann Clair of Lewis, KS; Myra Morrison and Connie Wilson, both of Stafford, KS; along with many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 11, 2016 at Debo Funeral Home in Fulton. The family plans to receive guests from 10:00 a.m. until time of services. Burial will follow at Millersburg Cemetery in Millersburg, Missouri. There will also be a visitation for family and friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 10 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Callaway County Library or Millersburg Christian Church both in care of Debo Funeral Home, 833 Court Street, Fulton, Missouri 65251.
