Georgia Eugenia Lewis was born November 26, 1926. She was the second of seven girls born to Ralph and Myrtle Fitzsimmons in Coffeyville, Kansas. After high school, she entered the Army Nurse Corp for her nursing training in Springfield, Missouri. Fortunately, World War 2 was over before she graduated. During her training she roomed with twins Betty and Virginia Lewis. Through them, she met the love of her life, their brother, Robert A. Lewis (Bob). She and Bob were married July 27, 1950 in New Bloomfield. They were married 65 years at the time of his passing in 2015.
She is survived by their 3 children – David (Becky) Lewis of Plano, TX, Dan (Suzanne) Lewis of Temple, TX and Jo (Kevin) Cunningham of Fulton, 5 grandchildren (Adam Lewis, Brett Cunningham, Cara (Amado) Gonzalez, Brady (Suzin) Cunningham, and Brooke Lewis) and 9 great-grandchildren (Taylor, Regann, Jace, Edom, Elian, Ethan, Baker, Saylor & Crew). She is also survived by two sisters, Jo Arnell and Sue (Richard) Gillis. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 4 sisters (Ann, Beulah, Caroline, & Jackie), and one grandchild (Regina).
Georgia, as she was known professionally, or Jean, as she was known to her family, was a registered nurse working in surgery, obstetrics, and emergency rooms in hospitals in Columbia, St. Louis and Fulton. In order to spend more time with her children when they were young, she began working as the school nurse for Fulton Public Schools and retired from there after more than 20 years of service.
After retirement, Jean and Bob spent many years traveling the country in an RV and taking Caribbean cruises. Travel was their favorite thing to do other than spending time with their family. Her other hobbies included playing Bingo, bowling, sewing and doing word search puzzles.
Although she was very quiet and reserved, Jean enjoyed life immensely. She loved her loud, and rowdy family gatherings and their extremely competitive card games.
After Bob passed away, Jean moved into Valley Park North Retirement Center in Fulton. The staff there was very patient and understanding, especially as her memory declined. She loved the activities and games there, and was still very competitive, especially in Bingo. Special thanks to the staff at Valley Park – Stephanie, Donna, Tammy, Kalyn and the rest of the wonderful people that made her last few years special.
The family has chosen to not have a public service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Valley Park Retirement Center, c/o Debo Funeral Home, 833 Court St, Fulton, MO 65251.
