A devoted family man, proud veteran, and beloved community member, Russell lived a life marked by dedication, resilience, and quiet strength.
Born on August 10, 1954, in Fulton, Missouri, Russell began his education in his hometown before moving to Topeka, Kansas. There he attended Boswell Jr. High School and later graduated from Topeka High School. Committed to furthering his education, he earned an Associate Degree in Business—a foundation that would support a diverse and accomplished career.
Russell served honorably as a medic in the United States Army. He was attached to a Green Beret unit and stationed in Germany and later at Fort Hood, Texas. During his military service, he also showcased his athleticism as a member of the Army’s boxing team—an early testament to the competitive spirit that would remain with him throughout his life.
Following his military service, Russell embarked on a varied professional journey. He managed KB Toys in Massachusetts before returning to Missouri where he worked as a truck driver for Pepsi-Co and Jorgensen Steel. Later in life, he found his calling with the United States Postal Service. As a mail carrier in Kansas City, Kansas, Russell became a familiar and cherished presence in the community until his retirement.
Russell’s passions extended well beyond work. An avid outdoorsman, he found joy and peace while fishing or hunting—especially when aboard his boat or tracking game through the woods. One of his proudest moments came when he finally netted a ten-point buck after years of patient pursuit. Bowling was another lifelong passion; he competed weekly in several leagues and was often the top scorer on his team with averages consistently in the high 200s. Twice he came within one pin of achieving a perfect 300 game—a feat that spoke to both his skill and determination.
He also enjoyed spirited games of dominoes and spades with friends and family—games that reflected both his strategic mind and love for camaraderie.
Russell was raised in the church and remained spiritually grounded throughout his life. In later years, he practiced as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses—a faith that brought him comfort and purpose.
In recent years, Russell resided at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico, Missouri—a place where he had continued connections and fellowship with other veterans.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon; son, Russell Jr. (Vanessa); brothers, Stephen C. Ferguson (Kim), Ronald L. Logan, Herbert A. Logan Sr. (Elaine); and sister, Jean Handy (Richard).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Doris J. Handy and Edward G. Logan; paternal and maternal grandparents; brothers, Gordan Evans and Donald Logan, and his beloved daughter, Shavonne Michelle Logan.
Russell’s legacy is one of strength, loyalty, and unwavering devotion—to country, family, faith, and friends. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to all who hear his story.
