Benny was preceded in death by his parents, Harley Denman Hood and Marguerite Smith Hood. From a very young age, Benny worked alongside his father, beginning in the septic tank business (Hood Construction Company), then the burial vault business (American Eagle Vault Company), and finally at Rainbow Monument Company. This business became Benny’s own and the one of which he was most proud, as it is the oldest business in Rainbow City. Benny brought his nephew, and the closest person in his life, Chris Smith, into business to learn and eventually carry it on. Chris also became his best friend, along with Chris’s wife (Marlee) and daughters (Charlotte & Caison), all of whom Benny deeply cherished.
Benny was also preceded in death by his sister, Norma Ree Hood Panell, and nephew, Bubba McConnell.
He is survived by his nephew, Chris Smith (Marlee); sister, Terri Hood Noojin; nephew Joey Panell; niece, Judy Panell Elkins (Tommy); great nieces and nephew, Charlotte Smith, Caison Smith, Katie McConnell (Dustin Jones), and Beau McConnell (Mattie).
Benny was a proud Mason and Shriner and held several offices throughout the years. He had many friends through these organizations, but his most faithful companion was R.C. Burgess, who remained by his side throughout his illness. Other special friends of many years include Wayne Wimpee, Mike Roper, & Bobby R. Crow.
Benny was a proud yet simple man and at his request, there will only be a graveside service at Crestwood Cemetery at 2:30 pm on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. It is to be directed by Collier Butler Funeral Home and officiated by Bro. Bruce Jenkins.
