
Frances Carolyn Hinton Watson, age 81 of Rainbow City, died December 12, 2011 after a long and courageous struggle with several illnesses. She was born in Attalla on November 12, 1930, and graduated from Etowah High School in 1948. She attended Eastern Kentucky University, obtained her undergraduate degree from Jacksonville State University and attended graduate school at the University of Alabama. A dedicated educator, she taught at Etowah High School, John S. Jones Junior High, and Alma Hinson Junior High before ending her career at Westminster Christian School. She was preceded in death by her parents, George D. Hinton and Kathleen Gilliland Hinton. She is survived by her loving husband of over 60 years, John D. Watson, Jr.; her children John D. Watson III (Ann) of Vestavia Hills, Kathleen W. Hughston (Ron) of Tuscaloosa, and James D. Watson (Robyn) of Vestavia Hills; her sisters Anne H. Beckert of Gadsden and Peg H. Wharton of Atlanta, Georgia; her brother-in-law Robert A. Wharton of Atlanta, Georgia; her sister-in-law Nell W. Hughes and brother-in-law A. J. Hughes of Jonesboro, Georgia; and eight beloved grandchildren, Amy Elizabeth Watson, James Austin Hughston, Watson Edward Hughston, John D. Watson IV (“Jay”), Anna Kathleen Hughston, Sarah Kathryn Hughston, James William Watson and Andrew Sparks Watson, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Shirley Simmons, Rose King, Tony and Renee Kilgore, Jamie Battles, Wayne Walden, Dr. David Wharton, Dr. John B. Morris, Dr. Scott G. Morris, Dr. Barbara Reiland and the members of the Rejoice Sunday School class. Pallbearers will be her nephews and grandsons, and honorary pallbearers are all of her students throughout the years. The family will receive friends at Collier-Butler Funeral Home in Gadsden on Thursday, December 15, 2011 from 6:00 until 8:00 pm. Services will be at Collier-Butler Funeral Home on Friday, December 16, 2011 at 11:00 am. with Rev. Larry Fuhrman officiating. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Westbrook Christian School (100 Westminster Dr., Rainbow City, AL 35906), the First Baptist Church of Gadsden (235 S. 5th St., Gadsden, AL 35901), or Tuscaloosa Education Foundation – Strings in School (204 Merina Dr., Tuscaloosa, AL 35406). “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7
