

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 18, 2011 at Hokes Bluff Cemetery for Mr. H.L. Porter, of Rainbow City, who passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2011. Rev. Ken Casey will officiate with military accompaniment. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Service directing.
Mr. Porter was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was especially proud of his service to his country. Among his other duties as a soldier he served as assistant chaplain, serving God as well as his country.
Mr. Porter graduated from Hokes Bluff High School in 1946, where he was Valedictorian of his class. He was a graduate of Snead College, Jacksonville State University and Auburn University.
Mr. Porter was a member of First Methodist Church of Gadsden. He taught in the Etowah County Schools before being employed with the Alabama School of Trades in 1957. He subsequently retired from Gadsden State Community College, East Broad Campus.
He is survived by one brother, Richard Shields; and two sisters, Mrs. Donalene Marbut and Mrs. Catherine Marbut.
Pallbearers will be cousins and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the building fund of First United Methodist Church of Gadsden or Hokes Bluff Cemetery Association.
Thanks to Gadsden Regional Hospital, Lawley Medical and Hospice and the caregivers who served him with special, loving kindness.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 12:00 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Collier-Butler Funeral Home.
