

He was born on April 23, 1929, to Frank Aaron Ashley and Vera Cochran Ashley.
He grew up in the Turkey Town area of North Gadsden and graduated from Gaston High School in 1947. Upon graduation he joined the Navy where he served for three years during the Korean War. Hayden married his wife of 50 years, Erin Ashley, in 1952. He was employed by Goodyear as an electrician for 34 years. As a member of James Memorial Baptist Church he enjoyed teaching Sunday School. Hayden loved serving the community as president of the North Gadsden Prime Timers Club and previously served on the Board of Forest Cemetery. His hobbies included woodworking, spending time with his family, eating lunch with special friends and helping others.
He was a much-loved father of Vera Skaggs (Charlie) and Sam Ashley (Jacki); four grandchildren, Melissa Skaggs Box (Jared), Brent Skaggs (Brandi), Blake Ashley and Jenna Ashley; great-grandchildren Joshua Box and Bronner Skaggs; two beloved dogs, Hershey and Buddy. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Erin Hooks Ashley, parents and six brothers and sisters.
Pallbearers will be Brent Skaggs, Blake Ashley, Jared Box, Steven Gilliland, Alex Money and Steve Ashley.
Funeral arrangements have been made through Collier-Butler funeral home. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 this evening. Homecoming celebration will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Collier-Butler Chapel with graveside service to follow at Forest Cemetery.
