Jack was born on August 22, 1948 in Alabama City’s mill village and often told stories of his upbringing and childhood days of playing ball, riding bikes, and getting into mischief in his neighborhood. After graduating from Emma Sansom High School in 1967, Jack went on to study and completed coursework in the field of architectural drafting at Gadsden State Junior College in 1969. With this expertise, he drafted plans for several homes and commercial buildings such as the Holy Comforter House in downtown Gadsden. He went on to work at many places including Allis-Chalmers, Siemens-Allis and Mid-South Electrics before he began his career of Inventory Control Management with Joy Global in Winfield, Alabama. During his 28 years with Joy Global until his retirement in 2016, he maintained several different plant facilities where machinery and equipment was designed and built for use in the coal mining industry in several different states. Jack served his community as a volunteer fireman for Rainbow City in the 1970s, 80s and 90s earning the rank of Lieutenant. A man who loved all sports, Jack spent many hours of his life on the playing field or basketball court as a teenaged player and as an adult sports official. He was a member of the Alabama High School Athletic Association serving as an official for football, basketball and track and field for almost 50 years in northeast and northwest Alabama. He often reflected at how many talented high school athletes he had had the pleasure of seeing in action in the games he truly loved. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, golfing, fishing and hunting. He could fix anything that was broken. Jack had numerous friends throughout his professional and personal life and he will be sorely missed in the hearts of many as he knew the value of investing in people. He fiercely loved his family and the time spent with his wife, children and grandchildren was so very important to him. Jack was a man who never stopped working, learning or trying to do better than the day before. He had an anecdote, story or saying for every situation and his words of humor and wisdom will carry on with his family and many friends. He truly was “a Jack of all trades.”
Pallbearers will be friends from the Gadsden Sports Officials Association, Paul Coggins, Jason Hayes, Daniel Huckaby, David Johnson, Thomas Krusick, James Miller and London Pierce. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the football, basketball, track and field officials with Gadsden and the Winfield Associations. Jack’s family would like to express their appreciation for the many prayers from family and friends as well as the nursing staff at St. Vincent’s East especially young nurse, Lydia Welch.
